Looks like I'm not the first with such a problem(!) but I can't get a connection with my newly acquired Livebox so would appreciate any pointers to help me get it up and running as a wireless installation.
I've contacted Orange but they said they couldn't really give full tech support since the wireless adaptor I'm using (a INEXQ UR055g USB adaptor, which may or not be the source of the problem) is not standard. When I then told them I was running Windows 2000 and not XP well that was that!!!
Although all documentation and lots of the comments on this site suggest performing the initial set up with wires is the best way to go, I'm not in a position to do this at the moment as my PC does not have a network card - hence my purchase of the wireless USB adaptor.
My installation efforts fail at the wireless connection stage - telling me that my firewall is possibly preventing connection. I run the basic version of Zone Alarm which I closed down prior to Live Box installation. I've read somewhere in these forums that there may still be some way that my firewall could still be active - anyone confirm whether this is the case or whether Antivirus software (AVG FREE) could affect connection?
When I run the wireless adaptor utility software it locates the Livebox with virtually a 100% signal (it's less than a metre away!) but when I try to connect it intermittently cuts in and out. The utility software allows for the input of the requisite WEP code. One thing the Orange support bloke told me was that the encryption should be WEP and Shared (presumably he meant 'shared key' as this is the option on my WA)? Is this right? There are other options available for encryption within the utility software for my adaptor but I have tried various settings without success.
Has anyone used a "3rd party" (i.e. not one supplied by Orange) USB wireless adaptor which works ok with the LiveBox?

I can imagine, if it aint XP or the Speedtouch 121g adapter then you'll get little if any help directly.

That actually really complicates things as there's 2 common causes where you'll need to get access to the livebox config.
There is a possible way around this though. If you have a USB A-B cable, commonly used on printers or scanners, (I have two laying around right here by chance) then as long as the Orange software is installed you should be able to connect to the USB B port above the ethernet ports on the side of the livebox.
Once that's installed, should do things automatically, then open 192.168.1.1 in your browser, username and password are both "admin" to log in. Under security and wireless connection you can change channel if needed, possibly will help but I suspect something else.
Configuration > Advanced > Wireless, try changing the security to WEP only. Press "1" on the livebox so the antenna light flashes and try connecting wirelessly again. Hopefully it'll then connect.

They should be ok, as long as you shut zone alarm off completely, I've had trouble with that interfering with things in the past no matter how much access I gave.

If it has a WPA option it's actually better to try that as it's more secure.

Oh plenty of them work fine. Just sometimes they won't work quite so easily.

particularly don't understand the bit about opening 192.168.1.1 in my browser - please excuse my ignorance!!
Just type 192.168.1.1 in the "Address" box in Internet Explorer. Then enter "admin" as both username and password. This will give you access to the configuration menus on the livebox.
I'm typing this in whilst connected through my wireless connection so your advice has proved very beneficial!!
Elhana you were right, it was the change to WEP-only encryption which seemed to do the trick as the wireless connection was made straight away after changing this. All I then had to do was resume the Orange start up disk and type my username and password in and I was away.
You did mention that WPS type encryption is better than WEP. I doubt I'll change for the minute (until I'm sure of the stability of my connection) but how would I change if possible to this better type of encryption?
Judging by some of the posts on this board, maybe this is all just the start of my problems!!

Yeah the livebox saying it could do WEP and WPA security confused your wireless adapter.

If your adapter allows the use of WPA encryption it's better to use that as it is more secure. You'd first need to check your adapter and/or software running it to make sure it supports it. If so change the livebox to WPA only security, set your wireless to WPA and enter the WEP key again. If it gives any trouble you can always change back to as it is now.
That is True. WPA is more secure but if Your wireless adaptor is failing to connect then go into the configure the livebox page http://192.168.1.1 and change it to WEP Security Only... Go back to the wireless connection and it is sure to connect!
