After installation and subsequent activation of Wireless & Talk (which went to plan and very smoothly), I noticed that they had very kindly supplied me with a number that included my local area (0151).
Great, I thought so much better than 0845 numbers and now callers and friends will be able to tell it's me especially if they programme their phones for this number.
After 3 or 4 calls to friends (I didn't warn them), I heard them pick the phone up, NOTHING, then heard the phone being put down!
I then rang them back on BT's line and asked what was popping up on their phone display when I rang previously.
INTERNATIONAL! or nothing were the answers they gave.
Now what do you lot do when your phone rings and withheld/international/nothing is showing on the display?
I personally don't answer as I'm fed up with foreign call centres and if people withhold their numbers then I withhold my answers!
As far as I'm concerned this is the equivalent of the system not working at all.
After querying this with a minion at Orange and getting nothing but scripts quoted at me I asked for the team leader who quoted the same spout at me. After minutes of requesting a chat with Escallations (bloody 'ell), I spoke to a cheerful Geordie called Ian who proceeded to explain the basics of VOIP to me (I was/am in communications/security for over 40 years)!
Poor Ian, it's not his fault but I had to shake my head when he suggested that I ring/put down/ring etc a known number of times (to my friends), so that they knew it was me! Try that with a company/service etc...
Needless to say I got nowhere.
I am kicking myself because I tried to think of EVERYTHING before I "upgraded" from my basic 2mb Wanadoo service. Incidentally I've been with Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange since day one and I have had nothing but excellent service with no problems.
Sorry about this diatribe but am I nitpicking or does anyone else feel this way or realised the problems this causes and finally has anyone complained to Orange about this? Ian claimed that they had NO complaints at all of this problem!
Well I've heard of that several times. Unfortuantly it's partly down to how the VOIP service works. As the numbers don't have to be limited to a specific part of the country then I believe they're classed as a non-geographic block, meaning caller display, as it can't be sure it really is in the area it says, says it's an international number. AFAIK there's no way around this at the moment.
It is also possible that the free VOIP calls are genuinely being routed out of this country (possibly over the internet) and back into this country as international calls, to take advantage of cheap surplus capacity or cheaper interconnect fees somewhere along the way.
My Talk service hasn't worked for over a month but when it did, caller ID showed my 0845 Talk number fine when calling a mobile but not when calling a landline. This shows there is no blanket restriction on passing caller ID, and that the VOIP system is capable of passing it on some types of call.

I have just tried that with mine and it does the same:
Calls to mobiles - shows Talk No.
Calls to Landline - shows International.
Indeed - it is only caller display on BT that seems to have a problem with displaying the correct Orange Number. Calls to Mobiles for example display the allocated number correctly.
Either Orange hasn't implemented the CLI interface with BT correctly or, perhaps more likely, BT are not being helpful by insisting that the link from Orange (in France) is an international link, and thus all calls must be shown as such.
If you are on a mobile, normally the CLI is shown correctly wherever the call originates, which is different from BT which always show 'international' for calls which originate abroad.
I changed my Talk setting this morning and have chosen to withold my number. It now shows as 'Witheld' if I call a mobile, but still shows 'International' when calling a landline
