I am glad I have found this Forum as I have been looking for something like this for a while.
As you guessed I am a customer of Orange. In November we decided to upgrade from 1mb to the up to 8mb service.
Unfortuntely, Orange report that we can't go above 1mb due to our telephone line. I have checked with BT who do whatever they do and they report I should expect to receive between 5-6mb.
I am not far from the exchange, about 500m and the various websites including BT Wholesale report that my line is capable of between 5-6mb.
Having spoke with Orange on a number of occassions, they say no, only 1mb and don't seem interested.
I have not received the Livebox as promised, however my router is capable of up to 24mb so this isn't the problem.
I really do beleive that Orange have simply capped my connection at 1mb.

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
lol why would they lie?
give them a phone and ask them to upgrade your line as fast as it can go because BT website your line can reach 6mb.
Ask them specifically what service your line is on currently and what for the upgrade. If the upgrade is for ADSL Max then it doesn't matter what speed they say as it should run as high as it can stabily.
If they mention LLU then it's probably something reported in that system that says your line can only get 1 meg.
Apparently when they regraded my Line they say the Maximum was 1mb.
As for Orange Lying, I don't know why they would or if indeed they are. I do know that when I have spoken to BT they can see no problem with acheiving 5-6mb.
If I post the details my router reports for all the bits and Pieces would that be helpful? I think it tells me about line noise etc. I have never really understood what those readings mean! Sorry about the lack of information, I am new to all this
I know that the Exchange has been upgraded to ADSL Max. Orange say my regrade failed and that they can only supply 1mb.
I will post my details this evening and thanks for your assistance so far!

You'd need to regrade onto ADSL Max for that and it appears thats where the problem lies.

All we can tell from the stats is what you "should" be able to get speed wise if/when moved onto ADSL Max. All thats really needed is the attenuation, noise margins and connected speeds.

That explains a bit, though it's hard to tell why it failed. May be worth asking them to attempt the regrade again.
Thank you for your replies. As promised I have placed the information you requested below. From some other stats I have seen it looks like my line noise is quite high but I am no expert!
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 1152 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 31 db
Upstream Margin: 31 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 22
Upstream Line Attenuation: 11
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
Anyway, in the meantime I will call Orange and ask them to perform a regrade and see if this does anything to help.
Orange don't seem to have any intentions of upgrading anyone via adsl max. I emailed them asking why they still have not upgraded when on our contract thru wanadoo it stated as soon as our line could support 8mb we'd get it, this has been so since march 06. Yet they're reply was we are not doing automatic upgrades, you will have to request an upgrade which means getting sucked into another 12 months. Thank fk we've only got another month left. I am absolutely gobsmacked at how such a large company can lie so much!

Actually the noise margin being high is a good thing.
Ok from those stats it shows you're currently on 1 meg IPStream or LLU. You "should" be able to get around 6.7 - 7.5 meg on ADSL Max or LLU but remember that's only a guide. That's a pretty high speed for a line that's not been moved up to 2 meg already.
I again spoke to Orange today and they still insist I am on the best service. I am not sure what else I can do. I guess they are right in what they say.
When I asked them they reported I am on their LLU but that only 1mb can be provided. They say nothing else can be done to help me.
I really am now beginning to think that they have capped my line at 1mb.
Well purely from the stats your line is capable of more, exactly how much more is debatable. It's possible poor conditions at some point in the past meant the system capped your speed to 1 meg as otherwise the LLU system "should" adapter and bump your speed up higher.
Thanks for your reply, I perhaps should point out that we only moved here in October, and Broadband was activated in late october 06. Shortly after this we requested the 8MB Service.
I spoke to Orange Customer Services again to explain that their Technical Support Team report my connection is set to 1meg. Customer Services peformed some tests and said, sorry you are on the fastest speed possible.
By this time I had become very frustrated with Orange and so politely but assertively said, something is surely wrong. I can't even run the BT Speedtest because it reports problems with accessing my account details and asks me to contact my ISP.
She politely suggested I phone there Technical Support team. I said "no I am not going to do that". I explained to her that I was sorry but Orange has offered me the worst possible customer service from any other company I have dealt with, and that I felt like a ball being batted from technical support to Customer Services. I also explained that Orange are trying to play ISP and haven't got a clue what they are doing. I asked if there is a department who look at the lines in more detail. She put me on hold. She came back to me explaining she was speaking to this department and put me on hold again. After around 20 minutes of holding it was agreed that my line is capable of around 6mb as per BT's findings and that they would investigate to get this issue resolved.
I have been told to phone back on Wed. To be honest, I don't hold out much hope.
For an IPStream connection it does. LLU connections, as they don't go through the same network and systems, don't let you do the test as it can't find the account through it's own systems.
Poochball, least that reply is better than the "you're on the fastest speed available" answer. She probably spoke to Escalations or Specialist Provisions to check that so hopefully it's getting looked at now.
From what I've gathered here and other places, the majority of people having problems with sub-8Meg speeds are those stuck on oranges LLU. Everyone on ADSL max service seems to get 4-7 megs with no problems. I think oranges LLU system is not able to provide higher speeds- I may be wrong but this is what I suspect with many people on LLU, I don't think Ive seen anyone with a 6+meg speed on LLU. IF this is the case Orange seriously needs apprehending because they are knowingly supplying bb with crap speeds knowing FULL well people are signing on for the high speeds.
If their system can provide the higher speeds, then it may be possible that they are capping people on LLU to squeeze more people on?
Who else feels like a f**king idiot for signing up for a pathetic service?...
