Right then Livebox has arrived and I have some questions before installing
1, I'm not bothered about the phonecall side of things,
2, at the minute I have my pc connected to the old speedtouch modem and 3 more connected through a netgear ethernet switch( mebbes not the best setup but it works for me) can I merely replace the modem with the live box and carry on? remaining on a wired network?
3, I've noticed some posts mentioning not using the Orange disc, why? and is it easy to setup without it?
oh and I sometimes stream for a net radio show will the livebox afect this
sorry to be a best but it's probably quicker and safer to get advice rather than fiddle with the damn thing myself
Potentially you may see a speed increase. Depends what speed your line is on etc.
One reason you may want to try the livebox is that you can connect the switch to the livebox and all PC's to the switch. Means they're independant and don't require your main PC to be on to connect. Also in general ethernet is a better connection than USB for connections. Though depending on the current setup you'd maybe need to fiddle with the networking settings.
You might get lucky with your speed. With my Livebox, my speed dropped down to 1Mbps and sometimes dropped. I then piggy-backed my previous Belkin router using an RJ45 cable into one of the available ports on the side of the Livebox, and now I can connect to my Belkin at 54Mbps and use the Livebox for Livetalk (hopefully when they connect me in 3 days time). I did not change any other settings on either router.
can I first say this is a great place full of helpful folks
just one more point if I may, I'd ideally like to use 3 pcs on a wired network and 2 laptops on wireless , is this likely to be a problem or tricky for a fumbling user?

To connect more that 2 wired computers you'll need an extra bit of hardware, an ethernet switch. You should be able to pickup one for a few pounds if you shop around, a quick check and I spotted 2 5-port switches for under £10.
Garghhhh
why do I bother? the daft thing tells me my firewall is on when it isnt then my network cable is unplugged which it isnt so it wont connect the livebox, back on the speedtouch now after following all the instructions and Elhana's little diagram, livebox heading for bin methinks
By default wired will automatically work when connected up. However there is one thing I did forget about that setup. The cable between livebox and switch may need to be a crossover cable. Depends if either the livebox (don't know about it in this aspect) or switch can auto adapt to the cable as usually like devices, PC to PC or router/switch to router/switch, require a crossover cable.
For the most part you can just check the status of the local area connection to see if it's working or not.
Just remember don't actually throw the livebox away.
right so I connect livebox direct to just one pc removed from network, lovely red lights all looks well, go to pc, nothing!!! and still the message that network cable is unplugged
Does it work give the same message in either port in the livebox?
Can you try another ethernet cable and does it do the same for other computers too? If so sounds like the livebox is broken.
