In general as time goes by and more people upgrade onto ADSL Max speeds will continue to get lower at peak times until the back end network is upgraded to be able to supply more bandwidth. They do this all the time but it's like trying to trying to avoid the incoming tide, stop and it'll catch you up.

There's low, and then again there's LOW - I've been getting speeds as low as 140kbps at around 9pm on some evenings, compared with 5.5Mbps at off-peak times.
You might be interested to see this scatter diagram I've produced, showing my download speeds (measured using the speed test at www.thinkbroadband.com) during the past two weeks:

I've been at my parents' this evening, and have just tested my connection - it's giving 5.6Mbps at the moment. However, my parents, who are on Orange 2MB, were getting well under 200kbps when we tested their connection at around 7pm.
Must stop this speed testing - it's starting to take over... ;o)
There's not a lot you can do about slow speedsduring peak times. As more people subscribe to ADSL the more the exchanges are packed, the more people connected to one server the slower you're going to get.

The original contention rate for ADSL was set 50:1 when BT made the decision back in... must have been 1995, that's when I remember it all coming in... Anyway, business contention is 20:1, and the home user gets 50:1. They really did not anticipate so many people taking it up, and they didn't really think ahead about it.

Not a lot, as I said, can be done. Short of switching you to a new server in the exchange, but most exchanges now don't have the capacity. I heard of one case, a while back, where an ADSL customer, I won't name the ISP, had slow speeds and wanted to get changed over. When they went to switch him over there was no new capacity at all, so he had to wait! They disconnected him and let him wait til they built new ports! This wasn't Orange/Wanadoo/Freeserve, it was another well-known ISP, but you get the picture I'm sure. Oh yeah, and he was paying the whole time. Didn't have a leg to stand on.
Yeah I'm in the same boat as others here. I'm on Orange BB unlimited; 6.1 Mbps at 9.00am but at about 8.30pm 1.4 Mbps according to thinkbroadband.com's speed test. Obviously nothing wrong with my Livebox and BT line or else it would be slow 24/7. Is that a fair assumption.
Surely Orange should be able to plan for greater capacity; when I was on Telewest Blueyonder it was rammed up at about 10 Mbps all the time.
I wonder if others have had any joy in getting any compensation out of Orange? Makes me wonder what I'm paying my unlimited upgrade money for.
Has anyone else recently experienced spped problems between 6and 10pm.
I usually get around 6-6.5mb speed but often during these times it is alot slower getting down to 1-2mb and sometimes lower.
I'm with Idnet, have been for the past 6 months since leaving the excuse for an ISP called Orange.
My connection is 4 MB, 24 hours a day and faltered in 6 months.
Orange cannot provide for or cope with its customers.
I am banging my head against the desk . At peak times I have a connection bareley higher than dial up. 68k
I wouldnt mind but my connection is 8 meg and i am paying £22.99
I have been with this company since it was Freeserve. I asked some dopehead at the Orange helpdesk if changing to the £19.99 package would mean a better evening connection he said"no" I don't want to tie myself down to a further 12 month contract when i can look around for a better ISP.
