Hey guys and girls - has anyone come across this before......
I have given my parents my old G4 and they now have Orange Broadband too which Ive set up and is all working fine...apart from the fact that they can only view their Orange email via internet and not through Apple's 'Mail' application.
Even though I have the pop and smtp settings etc.., the password keeps getting rejected or Mail switches offline (even though I know the settings are correct with regard to incoming/outgoing address, username, address and password....) has anyone else come across this problem?
I have had a freeerve account for a long while and also have Orange broadband but all my settings have always worked fine with mail...its driving me crazy and as far as Orange are concerned, all the settings are correct!!
don't know if you are still experiencing the problem. I initially also could not send any e-mail with Apple's Mail, and had trouble configuring my accounts. I finally managed to get it to work by using Orange's smtp-server for outgoing mails (smtp.orangehome.co.uk, without any authentication), and by making sure that SSL was off in Mail's Preferences/Accounts/Advanced.
Read a little more of the threads on this forum.....you will find that lots of people are getting 'password rejected' when trying to access emails. Obviously Orange have a problem but until someone can get through to someone who matters rather than the inept childlike cretins in customer support, nothing will change.
I know - Ive been finding more out since first posting - nightmare!
Orange had the best customer support until they took over sister compny Wanadoo and now its appaling and they're way out of their depth!!
OK, I am 'pleased' (sic) to see I am not the only one suffering problems. I have - to date - tried several ways around this as SMTP access to my own .com mail is a lottery.
It seems I have a choice of Three outgoing servers (smtp.freeserve.net / smtp.wanadoo.co.uk / smtp.orangehome.co.uk) all without password, all on port 25. The latter works more times than the rest and now is my default, but there are many times I have had had to plug away for ages and try the other two (when prompted by apple mail) before anything clicks. Don't even understand why wanadoo or freeserve should work, but they do - sometimes. It would be quicker posting the bloody letter in my local mail box (a two minute walk) than keep suffering the 'mail not sent - try another server or try later?' box.
As for the correct smtp access set ups with passwords, forget it. Oddly, Gmail DOES work perfectly, however.
Not good enough, and it all got many times worse when my line was upgraded to 8 meg. Again, I don't know why this should be either? Even the upgrade itself knocked out my ADSL filter, making land line calls impossible for a few days - a fact Orange accepted and apologised for.
ORANGE - PLEASE TAKE NOTE OR MY CUSTOM WILL BE SHORT LIVED.
