I am pretty inexperienced in the IT world so would appreciate any advice people could give me.
Have Orange broadband (through my BT line) with a Livebox wireless router.
I have 2 issues with the connection almost constantly.
1) Disconnecting. Internet works for about 2 minutes after starting up, then grinds to a halt. Disabling and re-enabling the connection via the laptop seems to temporarily solve the problem, then disconnects again. Either this continues with the connection intermitantly working, or after about 10 minutes the connection is fine.
2) Speed. 8MB should be possible. Confusingly for me though, my PC continually tells me varying connection speeds ranging from 0.5 to 54 I do not understand this but the speed I experience on the net does vary wildly when using.
I have no idea what is going on but the constant disconnections is absolutely infuriating.

Does the "@" light on the livebox flash at all when it disconnects? If not then it sounds more like a problem with the connection between the PC and livebox. Could be that you need to change it's channel to get a better connection between the two.

That speed is for the wireless link to the livebox, not the speed of the broadband connection itself.
Try the site Glenhill provided to get an idea of the speed of the broadband.
Otherwise this sounds much more like an intermittant wireless connection, poor signal or interference and as I mentioned above changing channels may help.
Livebox Channel Changing:
Prefrably use a wired connection for this.
Open 192.168.1.1 in your browser,
Click the link and enter the username and password both as "admin",
Next page go into Security > Wireless Connection,
Here you will see a drop down box probably set to 1 (default) try changing this number and submitting,
Best to try non-sequencial numbers - jump a few at a time instead of working through each in turn,
After submitting wait a minute or so and then try the wireless and hopefully it'll improve the wireless stability.
