I've been with Orange since the start (Freeserve, Wanadoo) & have recently signed up for the 8meg unlimited.
I received my equipment & set up by ethernet 1st. I then set up wirelessly. This did though involve a call to ts as i enteted my wep key in lower case when it should have been upper.
All in all i had a wireless setup within 20mins which is'nt bad considering some of the horror stories on the forum.
My 1st question is what does 8meg mean. Is this connection speed or dl speed.
My wireless connection is constantly changing to speeds from 5.5mps to 54mps. My livebox is downstairs & my pc upstairs.
What sort of dl speeds should i be getting from the 8meg connection.
Your line will be on a 10 day training period to establish its maximum stable rate and this will see speeds going up and down and some disconnections. Your line will then settle down.
The maximum speed you will get is around 7mb but that all depends on distance from the exchange, your line quality and internal wiring.

Hi Jahad
54Mbps is your network connection speed not your internet one if your on adslmax it usually takes 3 days to determine your speeds 10 days is the norm as glenhill says you can check your actual internet speed HERE and is an aprox reading after the 10 days you can check what your thoroughput is HERE

I have done a speed test which says my download capability is 786kbps & my upload rate is 225kbps. Does this sound right for 8meg broadband.
I was downloading from a site yesterday (nothing dodgy) & was getting 100kbps???
As said my wireless signal strength is continually jumping from poor to very good & the speed is constantly jumping from 5.5mbps to 54mbps is this having a big effect as i'm obviosly losing over 600kbps of download speed.
I have ben to the Broadband Resource site & found out this info.
My line has been unbundled by LLU operator. Line is ADSL enabled.
As said in my previous post i have done a speedtest with Thinkbroadband. This showed that my download rate is 786kbps & my upload rate is 225kbps.
I have now done a further test with Speedtest.net. This showed that my download rate 2383kbps & my upload rate is 233kbps. Latency 301ms.
I have now checked the livebox, here are the stats.
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 7.6
Attenuation (dB) : 27.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 8512
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 8128 288
WTF is going on here. Am i right in thinking that the Livebox is saying i should be able to download 8megs per second. If so why was i only getting 100kbps downloading from a reputable site.
Is it possible that the constant changing in my wireless connection stats are masively reducing my speed.
I should say that the fastest download speed i have achieved since starting the connection up 20 days ago has been 250kbps. alot of people have been saying that they have been getting disconnections during the 10 day run in period. My conection has only dropped once & this was only for 5mins so my line must be pretty stable.

Those stats show the livebox is connected at the full 8 meg sync rate, the margin has a small buffer margin to allow for a little instability while keeping the same sync rate.

It's possible although usually unlikely unless your wireless it very intermittant and showing a very poor signal. Testing using an ethernet connection should help rule that out.

There is no specific training period for LLU lines AFAIK which is what the stats show you're connected on. The first step would be to check your setup, wiring, etc and then get speedtests for different times of day before contacting Orange about it, if you've not done so already.
