Hi Guys,
Just background info first; I join Freeserve 7yrs ago on dial up, through BB at 512kb, 2MB and finally 8MB. This final upgrade has left me with regular disconnections, I'll be connected at 5.4MB It'll disconnect to immediately reconnect at 5.2MB and so on throughout the evening about every 1/2hr. As it reconnects immediately I've accepted this as probably the best service I'll get without having the line reduced to a permanent 2MB connection.
ATM I'm debating the Sky max service but the prospect of being without internet - they say I must cancel Orange first, get clearance from BT that the line is clear before subscribing to Sky - as left me in limbo for the present.
Could anyone comment if this change to another ISP is normal.
The other help I'm seeking is the Speedtouch modem worked ok at 2MB but when I switched to 8MB became very unreliable, there was a software update on the Wanadoo site which did improve things. I've just installed the original software on a new Laptop and need this update but can't locate it on new site, can someone please direct me to it.

Thanks for any help, Swog.
In typical Orange fashion, they're doing the "let's make the migration as difficult as possible" trick.
In my case this was the way I had to get out, took about a week for Orange to let go if my line, and another week to get it connected to my new ISP.
The new connection may cost you extra (cost me £40, but I wasn't taking out a years contract)
This really shouldn't be the case, Orange should issue you with a MAC which you can then give to your new ISP, and there should be no down time and no additional cost. One day you are with Orange, the next with your new ISP (similar to changing any other supplier - electricity phone etc...)
Though they are morally obliged to give you a MAC, they don't have to (though this may change in the coming months)
In my case Orange issued invalid MACs Three times. I so wanted to leave, I just cancelled it and paid the excess (smartest move of 2006!). I've heard the Sky 'free' service can take months to get connected (get what you pay for), I dunno about the max package.
I'd ask for a MAC first , they may offer you something to stay, if they don't give either, cancel and wait
On this occasion I cannot fault Orange, they provided me with a MAC in about 3 days, its when I contacted Sky the delays occurred. They said they could not use the MAC as I'm connected to a LLU (don't really understand the differences) and they use something else. Thats why Sky said I'd first have to cancel Orange, get clearance of line and then contact them ..... I'd then be on the bottom of their list and could be waiting ages, how bloody complicated !
Can anyone help with that software update for the Speedtouch 330 modem that made them more stable to speeds over 2MB.
Hi download it from HERE
and choose the link Driver for 8M lines.
Brilliant 'steve',
I remember it being linked to from the old Freeserve or Wanadoo sites and presumed it was produced by them. I now remember the Thompson site, even though its also changed, anyhow you pointed me in the right direction and I'll be sure to keep a copy this time.
At one point Orange techie suggested that they send me a speedtouch that would cope with 8 megs until they realised that I'm only on a pesky 1meg which is fine for me. He told me that speedtouch 330 was fine up to 4 megs.
Could this be more porkies? I don't know who to trust anymore!!

Well, my connection on this new driver is a bit weird.
As before, 3.5meg is full of random disconnects but anything below it, including 3.4 seems to work just fine. You guys reckon there's any way to ask them to keep me on the a lower speed like 2meg to save all the disconnection hastle?
It can't usually be resquested directly, supposed to be picked up and done if required during the standard faults process. Have you checked the wiring there as a little tweaking and fiddling may help stabilise it.

For what its worth mine was the same and was convinced it was at my end till i changed ISP i now have a faultless connection of 6.5Mb which Orange for some reason couldnt give me and insisted i had a fault on the line.
I use a speedtouch router but ive also tried my old speedtouch 330 modem with the up to 8m drivers and works just as well.

Since installing the 8mg software upgrade from the Thompson site my Speedtouch 330 has been able to hold the connect speed I first logged on at, approx 5.4mg.
It used to drop every 1/2hr down to 3.8mg, now it stays above 5mg with the odd disconnect. Being exactly 2 miles from the exchange I doubt I'll ever approach 8mg so I don't know how Sky will provide me with upto 16mg.
Does anyone have that service or know friends who do and are the 16mg speeds attainable ??
P.S. I've been pretty happy today with my steady connection but I had to go and tempt fate with this post ....... Its just disconnected 3 times and dropped down to 4.6mg in the time I've wrote this. At least I'm over the 12 month contract restraint and should be able to move when I find a suitable alternative.
P.P.S. I kid you not its disconnected again, logging me back up to 5.1mg. Better send this while I can.

I know a couple of people who have Sky broadband service wasnt very good might have improved now though they send you a wireless Netgear router which is locked into their service. one migrated away the other is still with them.
Have you tried BE they are good and have a good reputation find out if your exchange is BE enabled HERE
Or if you wanna stick with BT Ipstream try UKFSN and IDNet all good reputations on most forums and 1 month contracts.
