This is my first post using my laptop on wireless, if you're actually reading this its a miracle!
Okay now the problem, theres always a problem. When connecting to my livebox, most of the time it says "unable to connect, despite the fact I was on it seconds before and its showing as an excllent signal, and once I am on, its a miracle if my connection lasts for more than 5 minutes, sometimes it re-connects instantly, though more often it refuses.
Today I took my laptop a few miles down the road where I know of a place where I can connect, it connected fine despite the signal starting off as "weak and remained connected for 10 minutes while I surfed the net, although the connection was just about as slow and mine, when its working.
Does this suggest a problem with my livebox and if it does, why is the connection so slow all the time? My desktop is running much slower than normal, but this takes the urine. Surely a wireless laptop is capable of running at high speeds?
Could be a problem with the livebox or the signal itself due to some sort of interference. As for the speed what does a speedtest show?
I dont know exactly because for the past few hours it wont let me access any websites once its connected, the little icon in the tray flashes for a while and then always disconnects.
When I last tried it was something along the lines of 220Kbps which is total nonsense, thats similar to what my desktop is currently running at, and my laptop is ten times slower. Infact its making my old dial-up internet I had a few years ago look fast.
I really can't understand this constant problem with being anble to connect one minute, surf the net fine (but very slow) then it suddenly disconnecting, regfusing to go back on, and then when it does, wont actually do anything, before disconnecting several times.
Interference can really play havoc with wifi . Ive seen some places where the environment is bad enough that someone walking past is enough to drop the signal .
All you can do is go through each wifi channel on the livebox in turn and find the one that gives you the most stable signal . The list of things that can interfere is pretty long .
Basically anything on the 2.4ghz band can mess it up as well as environment problems like thick walls and close proximity to radio masts etc .
People who get it going without messing about for a few days are very lucky . THe "I'll go sit in the garden with my laptop and a beer" image in the media is sadly very misleading .
Wifi is one of the most challenging technologies to get working for your average user .
Your speed issues will lessen once your line has settled . Forget that for now and get your wifi stable , then when its sorted out it should all just drop into place .

Okay so now the predictable question How do I change the wifi channels?
