My PC upstairs connects to the Livebox via the dongle with no problems.
My wireless laptop cannot connect (cannot acquire IP address), except using the Ethernet cable.
Its been suggested I change the security to WEP only.
My question is
If I do this will my PC upstairs still connect OK? And, what should I do if I cant see the http://configuration.adsl page on either computer to change the security back to the original settings?
True and I wouldn't personally settle for WEP only security but at least with pairing it makes the livebox a little more secure. Also just having some form of security will disuade a lot of people trying to connect. Those who can crack through WEP and then spoof a valid MAC address would be likely to be able to get the software needed to break a WPA key too. If someone wants in they will get in, it's just a matter of how much time and effort it takes them.
Yeah, i.. ermm.. someone i am close to can crack wep in about 60 seconds, depending on the network traffic etc, WPA is harder but its still possible, its a pity the livebox doesnt have other methods of encryption and more tools like access lists etc...
Well the only thing up from WPA currently is WPA2 which isn't all that widely supported although it's getting there.
If by access lists you're talking about MAC address filtering then it already has that in the form of pairing. Shame you can't manually add or edit the list though.
As for that cracking WEP comment, I've read that there's a way to "generate" network traffic in order to speed the process up so as long as there router is on it can be "attacked". Hence why WPA is really the way to go, I'd be tempted to setup my own radius server on my network except I don't as yet use wireless for much.
Yep, i have no use for it yet, but i wanna get a laptop, so i'll have to turn my wireless on... knowing Orange it probably wont even work, i just have to gather the funds for a laptop
