I'm hoping someone can explain the info from the config page to me..
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 29.7
Attenuation (dB) : 43.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 6976
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 1152 288
The main part that interests me is the underlined part in blue, are these figures good, bad or average?
If they are good or average, how come i get this Rate (kbps)Downstream 1152 Upstream 288 ? I have also done a speedtest which never goes over approx 950 kbps on download.
It seems that my broadband should be around 7 meg and yet i only get 1.1 meg..Which is the same as i was getting with my speedtouch modem.

Noise margin is good, nice and high, higher = better. Though it indicates other things, see below.
Attenuation, not too bad, lower the better for that.
Attainable shows you should be able to get onto 6Mb download on ADSL max/LLU. It's only a rough guide though.
Ok, the actual down and upstream values show a couple of possibilities.
1. You're on IPStream 1 meg, thats why you're getting 1 meg speeds.
2. You're on LLU and for some reason it's running at 1 meg speeds instead of higher.
Have you tried checking what the member centre says about package/speed upgrades? It'll probably give the option to upgrade onto ADSL Max and you then should get those sorts of speeds all being well.
Thanks for your swift reply and the info...Now if only Orange support was that fast and as easy to understand ..
I have found out that im not on LLU as my exchange doesnt support it.

So i am on ADSL ,does ipstream 1 meg mean that Orange have me on a 1 meg package? or could there be another reason, because im paying for the upto 8meg package..
Sorry for what may be simple questions, but this is my first venture in the world of broadband problems, even though i have had the internet for a few years.(never had trouble before)
Your exchange is more than likely upgraded to support upto 8mb, over 90% were upgraded back in march, i sent an email to Orange reminding them that when we joined up thru wanadoo, we was told we'd be automatically upgraded as soon as our line supported 8mb, they sent a reply saying upgrade is free subject to a new 12 month contract. Now why would anyone want to sign up for another year when they can't even honour their agreement!
Well according to the details pelor provided ADSL Max is available there, not surprising really. Shouldn't be on LLU but you can't trust the checkers 100% for that.
You will be on 1 meg if you joined before October or changed onto the package before November, and your line couldn't take 2 meg non-Max at the time.
Right now you're stuck with that speed really unless you choose the upgrade option. People on 2 meg should be automatically upgraded within the next, just barely over, 4 months. After that they may do 1 meg lines automatically but not heard anything about that.
So even though im paying for an up to 8meg package now,you are saying unless i upgrade again, im stuck with one meg?
I upgraded to the package i'm on now in this october, from the 1 meg deal, in order to get the up to 8 meg deal, the checker says that the exchange was updated to adsl max in march of this year,so therefore it was capable of supporting at least 2 meg, which is also proved by the fact my step son,who lives next door to me,gets over 2meg through the live box and Orange..and is on the same package as me.(i also have a neighbour 3 doors away with the same package and 2 meg min).
We only upgraded to this package because Orange suggested to us that we needed to upgrade in order to get faster broadband,(yes we now have a lovely ,new shiny 12 month contract.Guess i need to be kicking myself over that.) and we now have the same speed as we did with our old package, something seems so wrong with this..
Just as a side note, i don't know how good the online testers are for checking what speed your line is capable of,but i have done nearly everyone i can find and they all come back ,including Oranges own one, saying that my line supports at least 4.3 meg and that was the lowest one..
And once again thanks for all your replies and info
The house wiring was one of the first things i checked, after reading the various forums.
The results from the speedtest are the same as i have received from other online tests..such as from this one http://www.speedtest.net, they all give me a range of 900+.
The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.BT.com for user xxxxxxxx and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
948 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
However line tests done by online checkers say my line is capable of over 4.3meg..
I followed your link and entered my phone number, and that is what it gave me, minus my own info of course (phone number,ip address,etc)..
So i have a rough idea of what the profile is, but how do i get it unstuck? I would presume its going to mean several long phone calls to Orange, [/sarcasm] with them trying to tell me i need to reformat, make coffee and stand on my head for an hour whilst drinking the coffee..[/end sarcasm]
What really annoys me most about this, is the fact that i signed up with Freeserve, went to wanadoo, never had any trouble sorting problems out,but Orange just seem to give me the runaround, such as being passed to departments, who will end up passing me back to the same department i started at,saying its not their section, then the original department sends me back to them again..Talking to them makes me feel like a well used tennis ball
Thanks Glenhill, I'll try that now.Would it be this email address i need 'customer-service@uk.orange.com' or would there be one just for broadband queries ?
That's the one I have been using. Be very explicit that your line can support a faster speed as line checks prove but your profile is still stuck on the 1mb service.
