I suppose the crux question is why the Orange system says that I am on the fastest speed that my line can sustain.
Would the system give this result because the BT package I am on is IPstream 500?
No, the line connection you're currently on has no real bearing on what should be available, unless you really were on the best the line could support.

If I were changed to IPstream Max and the line could only sustain 1/2 meg then surely the line would just synchronise at the fastest speed available.
Is this correct?
Perfectly correct, IPStream Max is not bound by any speed limits by default, apart from the upper 8meg sync limit.
The only time a Max connection is speed limited is when it does due to stability issues. Capping and speed limiting further down the system for whatever reason are a seperate issue and don't really matter in this situation.

Why do you think they wont the put me IPMax?
I don't think it's a matter of "won't" more of "can't" I doubt the BT system is preventing it so it's probably down to some glitch in the regrade or accounts system making it think it can't go higher.
Escalations are the way to go with this, if they try and argue it can't go higher then get them to confirm it with specialist provisions, both current speed and possible Max speed if they can't do it themselves.
I have exactly the same problem as you (except I'm on IPSTREAM 1meg) - and reached the same conclusions as you - see my last post in your previous thread.
Why won't they just put us on Max? We'll take the risk of it not handling it.
Incidentally do you get your broadband 'free'with £30/month mobile? Maybe this isn't that profitable for Orange.... I'm beginning to feel like I'm being dealt with in a fraudulent manner in order that they can throttle bandwidth to reduce costs. After all I would imagine IPSTREAM 1 or 0.5 meg will cost Orange less than MAX from BT..... multiplied by several tens of thousands of customers (most of which might not understand how to check speed or if they do then give up complaining....). Of course I'm sure a company such as Orange wouldn't do this but you do start to wonder....
Also Davelong - did you upgrade from Orange starter (fixed 1meg) to Max? Just trying to see if there are any other similarities here.
Unless we get a satisfactory answer this may need to be escalated out of Orange. Advice anyone?
Yes. I am on the free broadband offer with the £30/month mobile.
I signed up at my previous address and got IPstreamMax with a synch speed of 6.8 Meg having previously been with Tiscali.
I moved house after about a month but kept the same phone number and the same local exchange.
Apparently the Broadband plus package offer is no longer available for free with mobile phones and you now have to pay £5 per month. The free offer had run out when I moved.
I am of the opinion that this is where the problems lie and if I apply for the Broadband unlimited at £5 month, lo and behold I will suddenly be able to get IPstreamMax.

That shouldn't really be the case. You're on the package you signup to. That never changes unless Orange choose to terminate the contract for some reason, or you choose to change package. Moving house should keep you on the same package and put you onto an upto 8 meg product as that's what you signed up to.
Ladies and gentlemen this is a conflict between what the systems think and what we can actually do in real life. Orange call this a WUK and you need to call them and escalate this issue as a WUK and it should get sorted however it may take quite a while as they seem to fix them when they feel like it. ANYONE WHO REGISTERS NOW IS PUT ON TO IPSTREAM MAX UNLESS THEY HAVE AN LLU EXCHANGE. So that means that if your on IPSTREAM500 you can change its just a problem with Oranges systems. 192.168.1.1 - you seem to know what you're talking about. How do you know about WUK - Do you work for Orange or did you just have a similar problem? What does WUK stand for?
