I wonder if anyone else is having problems with ftp at the moment?
I've just (manually) updated the Livebox's firmware (to v5.08.2-uk), but have also installed the MS updates on Tuesday. I was having no problems uploading files to any of my Three websites (using uploads.webspace.freeserve.net) before these two actions, but can't now. I don't think it's a firewall issue - I've turned both the Livebox firewall and Zonealarm off to check whether the problem still exists, and it does.
The symptoms are that neither FireFTP, NVU or my "Network Place" in Windows can log in properly. They're clearly almost there, because the log for FireFTP shows the correct amount of space used / remaining for each account. Even more oddly, WS-FTP Pro (an ancient copy I still have) logs in, as long as I turn the Livebox firewall off (this I'd had to do using only WS-FTP Pro normally, before this problem began). I've tried using passive or active mode - no difference. I've tried with both my laptop and my desktop (unfortunately both patched pretty much identically) - no difference.
So I assume that either the MS updates (Tuesday's batch to XP Home SP2), the firmware update or Orange have broken something. I wonder if anyone's in a position to confirm whether they're able to use FTP, either with the same hardware / software as me or with a different set up?

This is weird! I can now log in using FireFTP, but only if I disable the Livebox's firewall. It definitely hasn't been letting me do this for the past few days, but before that I could log in with the firewall set to "medium".
on the left hand side i click under ftp update my site.
I then should go to a page asking for my E-mail & Password but no more.
I am now transfered to a page which says Sorry, this service is exclusive to Orange UK members.
I have spent hours on the phone and have sent various e-mails to Orange which are no help at all.
I can not even rejoin as it says i am already a member.
I have turned off the livebox firewall and still nothing turned off Norton Internet Security still nothing.
i am using Windows XP service pack 2 all updates complete to date.
I have read other threads with the same sort of problem dating back to July 2006 some have mentioned other ways of getting around this but none have worked in my case.
Both my websites are still active and can still be seen on the Internet.
Same here. I use WS FTP, also an oldun, but worked fine for the past 6 years or so until a couple of nights ago now I get a "connection failed" error.
Could it be they've pulled the plug?
I'm on a simple 1mb starter. Also have files I'd like to update but to be honest I wish I could just get in to wipe the lot and put them somewhere more reliable and secure.
I think it will be a real shame if these websites and files remain stuck in cyber space with no way to access them.
Orange's hole seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Could there be someone onboard their ship who could salvage things for them before they fall into it?
If there is and if they do they will make a real name for themselves!
I'm being silly now aren't I?

Does that mean you're using a USB modem, and not a Livebox? If so, that's interesting, because it rules the firmware update to the Livebox out of the equation.
Have you tried active mode (as opposed to passive mode)? I'm finding that, whereas it was previously fine with passive mode, it's not now.
I have awoken this morning to find my livebox has been automaticaly updated during the night it is now version 5.08.2-uk.
I have noticed i now have a new WAN IP Address it did start with 90.
It now starts with 84.
I can now access my FTP Websites.
Wether the change in IP address now allows access to the page i do not know but for some reason the ftp my site now once again recognise me as a customer where as before it did not.
It may be worth checking your WAN IP Address just incase.
My livebox has been updated but I can't access my web pages to edit them. The page freezes. Orange have been no help whatsover. Help!!

Have you tried disabling your firewall? Log in and select security > firewall > low (disable). Don't leave it set to low, though - just try it to see if it works.
Also try setting your FTP client to "active mode" as opposed to "passive mode".
If neither of these works, sit tight and recheck from time to time.
As i can now access my websites i updated this morning with the Livebox Firewall off but have done a test for you.
I have reset my livebox firewall to medium and can still access the ftp websites.
Apart from the livebox update last night nothing else has changed last Windows update was 16/12/2006 so it has to be down to something Orange has done.
Again the only change i have noticed is the WAN IP Address.
Many thanks!
Having turned the livebox to low security, I can now use Terrapin FTP to edit my web pages, but I have had to leave the box (in Terrapin's tools) "use passive data connections" unchecked, whereas before it needed to be checked in order to work!
Unfortunately, I still can't access my web site at ftp://uploads.webspace.freeser...ve.net/ but at least I am half way there!

1) Believes in using the same product that they are advising customers on, and
2) Is interested/motivated enough to try a few experiments themselves and pass the results on to their managers?)
Here's what I've found:
Using Speedtouch router - no problems at all using both active and passive mode ftp, regardless of IP address
Using Livebox (5.08.2-uk) - I'm always able to connect to the server and establish a control stream but in most cases I can't establish a data stream (to view/upload files).
Using passive mode I can't view files at all even when the Livebox firewall is off. (I can successfully use passive mode to other FTP servers.)
Using active mode, I can only view files if the Livebox firewall is off and only from certain IP addresses.
When I've got one of these 'duff' IP addresses, I have the same issue with active mode FTP to ftp.apple.com. Changing from the Livebox to another router, but retaining the IP address, fixes the problem for both the Freeserve and Apple servers.
I can't be certain when the symptoms started since I usually use the Speedtouch router, although I was using the Livebox on Saturday.
If there's anyone reading this who's still using the old firmware (5.06.2-uk), I'd be interested to know if your results are different.
Based on what I've seen, my advice for using uploads.webspace.freeserve.net via the Livebox (I largely agree with simondaw) is:
JIC there's any real techies reading here's a failed debug-mode attempt:

I emailed Orange a couple of days ago to say that I can not access my free Orange webspace with the Livebox but, I can access it when I swap back to my Linksys WAG354G v1.0 (1meg dl speed i.e. it's not an ADSL /2+) I tried all the usual tweaks but, my old Dreamweaver 4 flatly refuses to connect.
They replied to say :-
"Unfortunately there is a known problem at the moment relating to
accessing the Orange webspace when using the livebox. The cause of the
issue is currently unknown but should be resolved soon.
So until they fix it, when I want to work on my website, I have to unplug my Orange Livebox, and plug back in my Linksys.
