After all the usual nonsense I could take it no more and finally migrated away from Orange to BT Internet last month. All has been fine for 3 weeks but I took a look today at my Orange account just to confirm that they had stopped charging me. Not entirely to my surprise, a bill for December is about to hit my bank account by direct debit. I called Orange Customer Service and was told that I have to call them again tomorrow (Monday) when they have to speak to BT and sort it out. Apparently I have to be on the phone and it can't be done on a Sunday. I thought I was free but this all feels like the nightmare returning!
Can anyone advise me how I can deal with this?
This is because it is not a direct debit payment, it is a continues credit card payment.
You need Orange to stop the payments.
Orange do not take payments by DD, if this was the case you could get your bank to recall them all.
Actually MarkD Orange do take DD. In fact as of Mon they will charge you £1 / month extra if you do NOT pay by DD. (I assume enduring CC payments will be surcharged) Bit rich when this used to be the only way to pay despite the problems of cancelling
Sorry inform you guys, but i don’t think Orange do DD payment, its CC payment
I have a refund with on my account of 55 pound so I went to the Bank to stop the DD which it states on my bank statement, but the bank said it was a Continues Card Payment.
Can you two guys show where it says that you our paying by DD
If you read the Section near the top this is why the bank is saying this!!!!!!!!

Sorry guys, i have just checked and they do DD payment, but when i started paying it must of just been CC payment.
I still think andrew is paying by CC
Andy how long have you been with Orange
And The term to get your money back from Orange( If you pay by DD) is called an Indemnity claim

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. It is definitely a direct debit. I have spoken to my bank (not credit card company) about it again this morning. They are adamant that the onus is on Orange to stop taking the payments; I cannont unilaterally cancel it. I tried to call the robbing *******s but gave up after 10 minutes on hold. Will try later and let you know what happens.
I bank on line and one of the options is to cancel direct debits - I was having problems with a Utility Company so I just cancelled it and it worked!!
All my bank say is that I should let the Company know in writing as well and make other arrangements for payments if I'm continuing to "enjoy" a service!

Spoke to Orange "Customer Service" and after putting me on hold for over 15 minutes, the girl came back and said that my account has been cleared and they will collect no further payments. As a suspiciously-natured person I asked for confirmation by email but was told that isn't possible but i could write a letter to their head office! I suppose I will just have to trust them.
Spoke again to my bank (NatWest) and was once more told that only Orange can vary or cancel this type of DD.
I will just have to watch my account and see if Orange help themselves to £17.99 of my hard-earned on the 15th of this month.
(1) If you have a problem account with a company you pay DD to, cancel the DD but send a registered letter saying that from date xx.xx.xx you will be paying by cheque and they must forward an account to you to this effect.
In this way you are not refusing to pay, as you would be if you just cancelled the DD, and leaving yourself open to the bailifs, you are just changing the way you pay. Also it costs them more to process cheque payments and you can play ping pong with their accounts dept by letter questioning the account and getting it corrected before you pay it.
(2) This is a bit more drastic but easy to do these days, go in to your bank, ask them to close the account with the DD and open a new account.
Old one Mr. Smith, new one Mr, A. Smith or whatever.
The bank will transfer all your DDs etc to your new account but only the ones you tell them to!

Thanks. I'll try option 1 if they try to take money out of my account this month. Your option 2 is a bit extreme for avoiding a payment of £17.99 per month! What would option 3 be? Leave the country, change my name, have my faced altered with plastic surgery and the ends of my fingers removed??? Perhaps Lord Lucan was an Orange customer?
