Is anyone finding the quality of Orange VOIP to be pretty crap?
Is this just VOIP in general or are there any ways of improving it?
VOIP, acording to ISP's should be equal too or slightly better than a mobile phone though not as good as a landline.
Though most won't tell you this when you sign up
The quality is affected by amongst other things, (a) the signal is converted from analogue, handset, to digital, BB, back to analogue, handset, so some losses here.
And (b) the speed / quality of your BB connection, this again is affected by factors such as time of day, contention ratio, etc, etc. so more losses here.
A friend had the same problem, and has now got a Skype phone that gives better results but not the same coverage, so uses both to their best advantage.
I have a livebox and use a BT Cordless Phone with it, and i have not had any problems, the quality is very good, never had any problems with people hearing me or vice versa.
So in my experience i would really recommend it, i have already saved alot of money with it, and i use it more than my BT line now.
If the quality is worse than landline then this is not down to conversion from Analogue to Digital and back again.
Virtually all telephone exchanges are now digital and have been since the 80's. So unless you are on an old strowger or crossbar (analogue) system which can't handle broadband anyway, then the conversion is being done from A-D & D-A in your local exhange.
With voice over ip (livebox phone) the A-D & D-A conversion is being done in your livebox so no noisy analogue line from your house to the exchange.
The quality should be better.
This does not apply to freeview digital TV where the digital is definately lower quality than a good analogue signal due to compression artefacts (pixelation).
I've found the quality to be OK, provided I can actually connect in the first place. I mainly got this because my mum lives in Turkey and it costs a fortune to call her via BT.
Once i can get through to her number I found the quality to actually be better than when I've rung her via BT in the past.
Hi Not had a lot of success with the VOIP side of my Livebox as yet - quality is terrible with a BT cordless, but I think this is down to the phone and my on-going battle to increase my broadband speed (Im on a 3mb line but only achieving 0.6mb!)
Are all digital handsets compatible with Livetalk as I did try a BT digital cordless and it wouldnt actually dial a number!! Not sure it was picking up the line - but this couldve been the set which I have returned

This should not be an issue when comparing to normal BT line as thats also converted from analogue to digital at the exchange and back again at the other end. There could be an arguement that as VOIP converts it before applying it to the analogue landline then it will be less prone to quality issues such as noise as it passes over the landline. Spot on with all the others.
you're very precise with the numbers did yours improve??
lol - I'm a networks and distributed systems student
Yes I think it may have improved a little. Still getting a loud "screech" when I fist pick up the handset but then it stops and the line quality - although a little interference remains - is now at least usable.

Ok! I'm an ex-BT engineer - are you using a Dect phone too near to the livebox ? if so, might I suggest you experiment a bit and even try some other telephones, such as a corded version. I've even used a 1930's telephone on an incoming call and transmission was good- of course dial phones can't establish an outgoing call on VOIP.
My daughter just rang us from Surrey on the BT line and we called her back on VOIP and she said VOIP was much better!! Both are Dect phones.
