Why I can't get anything approaching 8Mb/sec with broadband Max???
In simple terms.
My exchage is Hulme Hall, I am about 800 metres away, my livebox says:
--------------------------------------
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009.d16m-1
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 30.3
Attenuation (dB) : 20.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 11072
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 608 288
WAN IP address : 62.136.201.104
Gateway : 195.92.214.13
Primary DNS server : 195.92.195.95
Secondary DNS server : 195.92.195.94
Internet protocol : pppoa
Encapsulation : VC-Mux
VP : 0
VC : 38
--------------------------------------
If I put the phone number of a relative who lives nearby into the Orange broadband speed checker it says they should get 8Mb/sec, if I put my number it says I am on the fastest speed I can get.
I cannot reconcile the conflicting information
help

The main thing to ask is are you on LLU or IPStream, and if it's IPStream is it Max(probably not Max from those details). If it's not on LLU or Max then you're stuck on a set speed connection which would need upgrading before you could get faster.
