Most routers if you access their config will tell you how long it's been connected etc. Amount of info depends on the router make.
rewclough you may want to reinstall it just to make sure the drivers are ok but definitely check that wiring as it's always a possibility something's loose or worn down a bit now.
Wilmslow 01625 exchange had Orange LLU RFS set for 30 Sept
Despite no advanced email notification, around 4 Oct my 1Mb speed changed to 5.3Mb AM by 10pm it was down to ~4.2 by 10pm. Daily variation is now ~4.5 to 3.1. after 20 days Line drops still seem to occur when speed drops - so connection flaky
Neighbours on Orange BB 2Mb, one lost service completely Fri 6 Oct, other lost it Mon 9 Oct, both still without service. Another on 56K dial up also no service(?)
After several long useless tel calls to Orange around the world, finally told our SpeedTouch 330s couldn't take the higher speeds available. Live boxes despatched. Mine gives me approx 0.5Mbs better than ST330
Neighbour A, Livebox gave no connection. Line test offrered, call back in 24 hrs. Called back, diff call centre, no test results on file, try again another callback, test indicates line fault, will take further 5 days to resolve. My line test also showed unknown fault.
IMO local Orange LLU upgrade wiring resembles spag bol!
Promised Live Box included wireless adaptor, not received
Also note Orange BB Unlimited launch on Thu 26 Oct 'delayed'
Orange claim to have 'ISPA Best ISP Provider' Award
Have emailed ISPA to suggest they 'review' their criteria to include cost effective customer service.

Well my problems are solved. Was on Xbox Live all night and no disconnections . I already checked my router stats to see my connected time and the system up time is 44 hrs 59 mins for the LAN port. WAN port is 2 hrs 38 mins. Not quite sure what that WAN thing is as I dont connect to the internet using it.
I presume it was the speedtouch that couldnt handle the 8mb at night time because of the increased noise margin on the line due to increased exchange activity.
Downstream Upstream
Line Attenuation 43 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 31 db
Those are the stats right now and they are much higher than in the day. Also my connection link is only 6784kbps downstream whereas later in the day it increased to around 8000kbps and then later dops again at night.
My connection loss problem is solved so maybe all of you having that problem may want to get a new modem. As for the other problems like drastic changes in connection speed I have no answer. Though again you might like to look into the new modem idea.

WAN stands for Wide Area Network, usually this is just another nicer shorter name for connection going to the internet. My router refers to WAN for the connection in some parts too.
Thanks for the advice Elhana, it's not the drivers though. Infact I have a shotcut on my desktop to reinstall them as sometimes the dial up software tells me "no dial tone" despite two green lights that say otherwise, so it either takes a reboot or reinstall to fix.
I just tested plugging my modem directly into the main phone socket bypassing the extension cord but it disconnected much the same.
I guess this leaves two options, either the problem is the internal wiring of my flat, which I cant do much about or it's the modem.
As it worked for skyline I think i'll invest in a router and give that a try.
Thanks for the help, I'll post back soon hopefully with better news.
Well it's good news I'm pleased to say. I got a router, the same one as skyline, the netgear DG834, and it works fine. So despite my old "stingray" type speedtouch modem claiming to support speeds of up to 8mbps, it clearly doesn't. I shall try to resist the urge to hammer throw the thing over my garden fence for the trouble its caused.
