About 10 days ago I got my broadband speed upgraded for free by Orange (possibly llu). It was working fine for the first week, I had connection speeds of 3.5Mb/s and download speeds of at least 300KB/s so everything was fine. However in the past few days the connection has become really awful.
The connection speed is still around 3.5Mb/s but when I go on various speed checkers I only get speeds of 0.2Mb/s or 0.5Mb/s, which is slower than the speed I had before the speed increase. Also download speeds are sometimes at about 64KB/s.
Also when I look at my connection status I've got thousands of received errors, as far as I remember i've never had any errors before. I'm using a speedtouch 330 usb modem by the way which I've had for 2 years since I registered with wanadoo.
What's the problem and how can I fix it?
EDIT: also, in the evenings my connection frequently drops and I have to reconnect again.
I just reinstalled my modem and now im getting 1.8Mb/s which is a lot better than before, I'm getting less errors too. I suppose at this time of night im not going to get much more. Im getting less errors too. hopefully this has sorted my problem out, or maybe Orange sorted it out while I was offline for a few hours. I installed some new modem drivers a few days ago which may have caused the problem. I just hope this problem doesnt come back.
I had been quite happily using my Orange Broadband with a connection speed of 7.1mb from June/July, when it was upgraded, until the beginning of September. I then noticed that my commection speed had dropped to around 4.5, then 3.7 and my connection kept dropping, when I went to reconnect I got the message 'no dial tone'. I put a fault call in to BT on Sept 7th 2006, and the line check showed that there was not a problem.
I telephoned Orange and they asked me why I was not using my Livebox, I told them I had been using my Alcatel Speedtouch modem quite happily at 7mb, anyway my pc does not have an Ethernet port so I could not install it (bought the pc in Jan 2001). They told me that there was not a fault with Orange and the agent found it amazing that I had such a high connection speed on a Speedtouch modem. I told him I certainly had enjoyed such a fast speed and had not been imagining it!
Like Pulsar, in the evenings I frequently lose my connection, by frequently I mean every few minutes, and I have to wait a few seconds for the modem logo to show green again and I can connect - until this point I get the message 'no dial tone'. I also get a lot of errors that did not used to occur. My connection speed is now about 1.7mb - a big drop with no apparent explanation from Orange.

Had this problem ever since I upgraded to 8mb. In the day the connection is around 6.5mb but in the evening it drops to 5.3mb and randomly drops the line as you have described. Was gonna switch to BT but have heard the same problems with them

Ive been thinking....maybe it isnt Orange why our lines drop at night. It could be the fact that the exchanges are overloaded with people at peak times or maybe our indivudual lines are faulty (my house is fairly old). Could also be the internal wiring within the sockets or the sh***y speedtouch modem they supply us with.
Well anywho tomorow I get a new ethernet router so I'll post my findings then (whether the lines still drops and if the connection speed has increased).
Skyline that dropping line sounds like it's more to do with the service adapting to the line. The 8 meg stuff is all rate adaptive so in the evenings when things are busier and there's in general more noise on the lines the stats will drop some. If it's too much then it'll disconnect so it can reconnect at a lower but hopefully more stable speed. Well thats how it works on ADSL Max, we don't have details on how the LLU system works exactly.
A new modem/router is a good thing to try though checking your house wiring will probably help a lot if there's any dodgy connections or really old wiring/boxes.
Well I got the new modem, connection seems faster now but I cant test for dropped lines until later tonight. Ill have to test the phone sockets and wiring too as you suggested Elhana.
One more thing maybe you could help me with....
I cant access the Internet using IE as I dont know what settings im supposed to be using. Was using the speedtouch 330 USB modem before and that was fairly simple. The actaul Internet works as I can connect using Firefox and I can use Xbox Live, just not IE.
The modem is a Netgear DG834 and is connected via Ethernet. I shouldnt have to dial a connection to access the Internet (and I dont) as I can use Firefox as soon as windows starts up.
Any suggestions on the connection settings I should be using?
Try opening IE Tools>Internet Options then Connections tab and check the option Never dial a connection if thats what its trying to do.
lol how weird
I tried that earlier but it didnt work. Your post made me mess around some more. Tried changing a few settings for the LAN and decided to turn off proxies for the connection. What do you know it works lol!
Have the same problem here, thousands of errors. Can stay connected for an hour or so in the morning but after around 6pm i'm disconnected every 5 mins or so. My flat has old wiring and I also use a telephone extension cord, this i suspect is the problem. I need to try the modem directly from the main socket to test really.
I've got a speedtouch usb "green stingray" like thing, but i don't think thats to blame.
Well Ive had the new router for a while now. My net seems to have not disconnected since I set the router up!
I mean I cant actually tell as there is no dial up program that needs to be used but the adsl light on the router hasnt flashed once so I can only presume the probelms have stopped.
Left msn messenger on for most of the night and it didnt kick me off once so I can safely assumed the internet has now stopped randomly disconnecting in the evening.
Will post back tomorow probably to confirm this. Seems too good to be true
