If you find out how far you are from your exchange as the crow flies, times that by 1.5 and thats how long your line is (as a rule of thumb). BT dont route in straight lines, they go round the houses, literally!
i am a Team leader at wanadoo and the correct distance is 3.2 kilometres for loss of ADSL signal. The further away you live, the slower the connection. anything after 3.2 kilometres then the signal can only be connected by dial up internet (56 kbps).
the only other reason why speed can be different for neighbours etc is quality of your phone line itself. if you have a sub-standard copper phone line, your gonna have problems getting fast broadband no matter who you get broadband with (that includes the almighty BT as well!).
