I am having problems getting access to my website for updating via FTP to uploads.webspace.freeserve.net
All the settings are correct and were working perfectly the last time I updated in March. Seems like since Orange took over it's all gone weird.
I get an Error 530

Have Orange deleted my access to the FTP server for updates? My website is still active (www.arctica.freeserve.co.uk) but I just can't get in to update any files.
Any help or ideas welcome -I'm not hopeful of a intelligent response from an e-mail I sent Orange on this.
Thanks
Lester

I get a similar problem trying to update my website.
ftp to uploads.webspace.pol.co.uk gives an immediate 'connection closed by remote host' message (before any username or password prompt).
There's no problem with the connection, I can ping uploads.webspace.pol.co.uk.
I update the site weekly - it's been failing since 7th October - the last success was on 30th September (so its has worked under Orange).
I've emailed Orange via the help webpage and got an reply saying it's a known problem, engineers are looking at it (that was nearly a week ago).
I can't see how the problem (if it is a problem and not a deliberate action by Orange) can take that long to resolve !
I tried the telephone Broadband support but got referred to Sitebuilder/Mysite on the Orange website. Great, but I don't want to create a new website with a new url which no-one else will know - I want to update my existing site (if only to say that I've run out of patience with Orange and the site is now hosted elsewhere !)
It wouldn't be so bad if they just told us what they were up to !
From a search the 530 error usually seems to be do with the number of simulatneous logins, but there's other reasons too and the examples I've seen usually give a longer more detailed error message. Sure your account is still active? If you try the email through the Orange site and it doesn't let you in then that may indicate it's a suspended pay as you go account that just needs reactivating.

Hi
I am on a unlimited usage account (contract) and the website is still active. I had accessed it via FTP not that long ago back in mid-July.
For the money I'm paying for access I expect the damn thing to work. My FTP login and password are, and always have been, correct and so unless they have purged those details from their system recently I don't know why it should be doing this.
I hope that I get an intelligent response to the e-mail I sent Orange, otherwise I will try and speak to a techie on the phone. Kind of gives me more incentive to setup a domain and web hosting elsewhere.

Just did a ping on the upload server and that was all fine.

Maybe the earlier problems were a result of this change.

I've got round the problem by disabling my firewall (zonealarm) - but it's not the ideal solution !
I phoned up Orange this morning and told them what was happening. They said it was a known error and that some people could upload via FTP and others could not. I was told it would be another 24 hours before it was resolved. A good time to call them is always early in the morning!
Will have to see if the problem gets fixed. At least they admitted it was a problem on their end and that our login details were correct.
It kind of makes you wonder what they have done with the servers for this issue to arise.

Well after all the calls and assurances, it turns out that the Broadband call centres allegedly do not deal with FTP or website details, and that a third party deals with this.
Tried e-mailing possible points off the web builder pages, and all that you get is an automated e-mail with standard FAQ type solutions, none of which apply.
Clearly there is no way to contact the "live" people about this issue, so all that remains is a direct letter to their head office. If that proves a waste of time - and they just ignore the letter, from a paying customer, then there is little to be done. My website is online - and I can't even get to delete the damn thing if I wanted to.
As far as I can tell, using WS_FTP pro the login works as far as the user name and then falls over at the password - which has not been altered. I can only conclude that in the change over from Wanadoo to Orange that the password/username database got corrupted for a minority of users - i.e. those that built sites on the old Freeserve structure. Perhaps this is a generalisation, but it seems the only logical answer.
It is blatantly obvious that the so-called help from the Call centres is limited to very basic responses to standard connection issues or e-mail and nothing beyond that ...totally crap.
I get a similar problem trying to update my website and trying to connect to uploads.webspace.freeserve.net. This was working a couple of months ago (25th August).
I've accessed my Orange/Wanadoo/Freeserve mail account and the internet by dialling up and that still works, so it's not been de-activated.
Using Terrapin FTP to contact uploads.webspace.freeserve.net I get to:
"Local time is now 21:06 and the load is 0.00.
You will be thrown out after 900 seconds of inactivity.
User dartfordchoral.fsnet.co.uk OK. Password required.
You are using 5.83MB of space and you have 9.17MB free.
OK"
I then receive an error dialog box saying:
"The connection has been reset by the server. It is possible that you do not have authority to connect to this server. If you are connecting via the Internet check that you are using the correct dialup account."
Could it be anything to do with the pay as you go dial up number - I'm using 0845 0796699 ?
Thought you'd want to know that others have the same problem!

Hi Andrew
Well I am just about at the end of tether on this issue. I have sent repeated e-mails, often the resonse is just send an e-mail to some other place, to which you will get an automated response. The customer service people seem unwilling to do their job or simple requests, like provide me with the details of the FTP administrator (name, e-mail and phone number) - or to pass the query to someone that can help.
My only recourse now is to go through their head office , which will mean an exchange of several letter I'm sure assuming they even take customer service seriously.
When I attempt to login via FTP to my original Freeserve space, it clearly accepts the username, but not the password. I can only assume that Orange have change the passowrd without informing me with the intent to make me use their FTP mysite or Sitebuilder option. I know I'm guessing here, but this is getting beyond a joke.
I had a problem last year which cleared itself the next day and also one this year with regards connection failed and loss of webspace; ie only 5mb left when there should have been around 12mb.
At present I have a connection failed error using WS ftp See this thread:

I'm of the same mind and just want to get back in to delete all my files and get as far away from Orange as possible.
Hi
In the end I had to move my site to the Orange "Mysite" system so that I at least could edit things. I since discovered that my original freeserve URL is no longer accessible - deleted without warning! No w the problem with the Orange webspace is that they put their own banner on the sites as it is loaded thereby negating search engines from reading designated keywords defined for the page(s).
This is a temporary situation until I sort something more permanent - customer service with Orange is poor to say the least!
A good compromise for locating a site is via Bravenet as you can build a site or upload an existing one. Also give you the chance to upgrade to a pro version at a later date. Only downside is that free hosting does not let you use framed pages.
Maybe one day Orange will get a clue that the customer comes first - they have enough advertising without having to use their customers sites to put their ad banners on!
It doesn't surprise me one bit that they would sink to this level but what the hell; they've done themselves in I reckon!
It's just a f**** disgrace that they don't let people know so that they can delete their website folders instead of having them stuck out there in cyber space doing no good at all and confusing everyone!
Orange have certainly cooked their goose!
It's not surprising they're pushing the premium rate help lines is it; I mean, they must be losing a f**** fortune as we type and as for bad press they've done themselves proud. They should write a book called "How to flush yourself, your company and your shareholders down the toilet"
