I'd just firstly like to say I've read through a fair bit of this forum before deciding to post a new thread and although a lot has been answered, I'm not sure that my query has...
As the topic describes, we have the free broadband service (through mobile contract). I say we, because I am living in a shared house and also I am not the account owner of the service but I do know we are not getting the service that is described on Orange's own website.
As far as I know, we should be receiving 'up to 8meg' malarky, which according to our Livebox, our line can receive about a maximum of 3 to 4 meg.
The first Three websites confirm we can receive ADSL Max 1.5meg or above. but Orange report we can only receive 512k.
According to BT's wholesales website there was something about waiting 10 days for the maximum speed to be registered and so I thought fair enough, I will wait for that. That initial 10 days was up yesterday and there has been no registed change in speed.
Last night I turned off the router all night and then checked it this morning, with no changes shown.
I think I have done most things possible, with ringing Orange left for last option, but I want to try here to see if I can save my landlady's money (going by the posts of how terrible their Customer Services is).
What I would like to know is if;
a) I'm not wrong that we should be expecting up to 8meg service?
b) any possible reason we are not getting it?
c) if its Orange's fault and they've most likely set a minimum speed via ADSL and not 'enabled' ADSL Max?
I would just like to add, we are in the Winterbourne area and unfortunately a fair distance from the exchange.

Yes and no, see the last one below.

It's possible something odd is going on and if you're on Max then you'd definitely need to wait the full 10 days to make sure it doesn't correct itself.

Here's where things will get complicated. Orange only brought in ADSL Max just recently, in fact it was supposed to be from the start of October that new lines go straight onto ADSL Max. If you're 10 days are just up, and allowing for the activation time it puts you into September when you registered. That may mean you're on plain ADSL and not ADSL Max. If you go into the Orange member center there's a speed option, does that give you anymore info like offering to upgrade for £20? If you're given the £20 option then it looks like you did just miss going staight onto ADSL Max.
In the big long ADSL Max thread there's a link to speedtests etc which should confirm if you're on Max or not by giving more connection info though I've never looked at that myself, although to be sure you could call, or email Orange to verify what you are actually on.

Hi greggy try here BT Max Speedtest you will have to put in your phone number of the line your inquiring about and the username and password of your ISP DSL login it will give you the lines ip profile that BT has set for your line if you have been definately MAX'd and your present speed if you get errors you will have to try a few attempts.

It is definately over 10 days now. I only assume I should be on ADSL Max because that is what enables 'up to 8meg' and what the mobile + broadband package describes on Orange's website. Going by standards of ADSL though, it looks like we are on the lowest speed available.
Unfortunately I can not sign into the member centre as I am not the account holder, but I may speak to said person tonight.
I should have mentioned in my original post that I did the speedtest provided by BT as well, however going by what stevelondon says, I have never had to put in a username or password (tested in both IE and FF), only our phone number.
I don't get as much details back, apart from typical results of how fast the line is (averaging around 400k, lower if its a busy time in the shared house) and definately nothing describing 'max'.
I guess the only resort is finding out through Orange (either online or via phone) how our broadband is set up.

Yeah sounds like you're on plain ADSL, as I said before it could be down to the point you signed up, very close to the transision to automatic ADSL Max. As you're on 2 meg you should be automatically upgraded at some point, when that ends up being however we can't tell.
Just want to add we are not on 2meg service, but anyway, cheers for your help. Here's hoping its a painless switch!
Ah yeah, I overlooked that and assumed it would be 2 meg. Not sure on what happens if you're not on 2 meg, I know 2 meg get auto upgraded to ADSL Max at some point.
BTW if they say it can only be done by paying the £20 fee then I would recommend waiting a couple of weeks if you can before trying to regrade.
