I have the Livebox running ok (lucky me) i get a good speed and a reliable connection, I am wired directly to the box via ethernet.
Things aren't so rosey for my girlfriend downstairs. We got her a Belkin Wirless PCI card and connected her to the network relativly easily. Her speed is appauling though, on ADSL Speed Test she only scores 0.2Mbps even though her wireless signal strength is reported as 18Mbps (which isn't great but should be ok surely?) Then even more annoyingly she gets disconnected randomly after anbout 15 mins. Then she can only reconnect if I press the "1" button on the live box again.
Hi Crin,
Is the 'downtairs' computer a laptop? if so try it in the same room as the PC. and see if there is an improvement.
Looking at the 18Mbs which is reasonable but quite low, (average best is about 54Mbs so the signal strength is less than 50%), the random disconnects, and the button 1 pushing it looks like you are having poor signal quality.
Try changing to another channel, moving the livebox if possible, make sure things like fridges. tv's microwaves etc are not in 'line of site' between the livebox and downstairs comp. thereby masking the signal.
It may be simply that due to both locations the downstairs comp. is in a radio deadspot.
You can get WIFI boosters not cheap but may solve the problem,
If all else fails have a look at www.homeplugs .co.uk, a novel way of getting round dead spots.
They comprise of plugs that you plug it to your 13 amp sockets, one goes near to and is connected to your modem/router, the other is connected to ANY other socket in the house, a short ethernet cable then connects to your second computer, not as neat as wireless but sometimes the only solution.
By the way with my laptop in the same room as the modem/router I get 54Mbs, in the next room 20 feet away15Mbs, in the kitchen 40 feet away 24Mbs, upstairs 1st floor av 20Mbs, upstairs 2nd floor 30Mbs ! Not logical is it?
Also moving around the rooms there are sometimes quite large variations in signal strength for no apparent reason!
And no before you ask I'm not a nerd walking around the house with a laptop , when I first set up the wireless my grandson wanted to see how well it worked and spent an afternoon wandering the house to see if he could find where it wouldn't work !!
[quote="Elhana"]I wouldn't want that on my lap seeing as it fits PCI cards.
I don't always agree with you Elhana, and agree to disagree in some cases, but I bow to your superior knowlege this time
I could blame not knowing my alphabet, and many other things, but the real reason for mis-reading would be down to the extra late evening glass of red wine affecting the eyesight!!!
