I switched from dial up to broadband 10 months ago.
The 2 meg service would run generally at over 2 and sometimes up to 3.5
My "service" was upgraded to 8meg in the middle of June and since that moment has not functiond properly.
I now get 600k at best, but generally 500k. Last weekend it droped to 60k download with 0 (zero) upload.
I have phone to cancel my account and was promised that my problem would be sorted and I would get a call back in 48 hours. 5 days later and no call and no improvement in speed.
It's also worth noting that the Talk sevice is unreliable too.
My concern is, "Will it be any better if I move to someone else".
I am tempted to go to BT just so it removes the "it's not us it's BT" excuse.
Your opinions and experience would be appreciated.

Same here. Freeserve PAYG dial-up, then "anytime" then 1Mb broadband all no problems over 7 years. Then, from day 1 of LLU upgrade, no more broadband and weeks and weeks of wasted time and effort trying to get Orange to communicate with their own engineering contractors to get them to provide even 1Mb of the 8Mb service they had hustled me into.
After nearly 2 months, cancelled, line cleared and within 2 weeks, new ISP was providing a stable broadband connection from day 1 over the same wiring from the same exchange to the same kit in my house.
When I did have to speak to the "new" tech support, got straight through in two rings, spoke to a person who clearly understood what I needed and apologised that all the support staff were on the phone but someone would call back within 30 minutes. In fact I had an email back within 15 minutes which was all I needed..... All of you still learning the music-on-hold playlist off by heart might like to read that again
Orange lie and give out excuses, thousands of people have become victom to their circus act including me in the past.
I too switched to Idnet and the connection has always been 100% stable and fast.
When they tell you there is a fault with the BT line it's just lies.
Goto a real ISP, Orange are not one.
My first ISP was Pipex (after Compuserve, but they didn't call them ISP's in those days) in about 1993. They were good then, hardly ever a problem and any that were were fixed pronto. They seen to have a good name now.
Also what's the situation with MAC's are they needed or not?
trouble is all isp's are as bad as each other and sooner or later they will all be free but you will have to use them for somthing like Orange or Sky, so as toch wood not had anyproblems since i got this up and running, i am going to stay with Orange
In some respects, I agree, they are all as bad as each other:
All ISP's have technical problems, especially when introducing a new service such as LLU broadband. All ISPs will have incidents of poor technical support, or poor customer service. All ISPs will have examples of poor planning, project management and change control. All ISPs will have instances of poor internal communications. All ISP's will have instances of poor communication with customers, suppliers and sub-contractors.
However, no prizes for guessing who I'd rate as current market leader at being able to combine them all at once.

....even a little biddy clue???
...as if we don't all know...why else would we be here?
Having only been with 1 ISP the last 8 years or so I can't comment too much except that:
1) I joined Freeserve (pay as you go) - 100% satisfied
2) I upgraded to Freeserve (unlimited - dial up) - 100% satisfied
3) I upgraded to Freeserve Broadband (unlimited 512k) - 110% satsified - connection was set up and active before the modem even arrived!!!
4) Wannadoo came along... no change
5) Had a problem with EMail SMTP server failures, took 4 emails to fix the problem... not bad! 90% satisfied
6) Wannadoo offer 2Mb upgrade (though only with 30GB cap) - accept this, & it happens soon afterwards - 90 % satisfied (loses 10% due to cap though I never exceed this.
7) Wannadoo becomes Orange (May 2006)
June 2006, for first time in 3 years start to get intermittent problems connecting. Initially put it down to modem/router. Satisfaction slipping...
9) Mid July, Broadband disconnected, and has been so ever since. All supposed 'help' desks absolutely useless, satisfaction 0%
Funnily enough a friend had a similar issue with Bulldog, a few years back he swore blind Bulldog were sooo good.
A small company offering a reliable and well priced package, if you had any problems there was no 'layers of incompetance' to deal with. Now after the various takeovers.... the whole experience has turned to s#it.
I think the way ahead it to join companies tha AREN'T backed by some bigger organisation. All you end up with is bureaucracy, and the low level tech stuff outsourced to the cheapest bunch of monkeys they can get.
When the service works, all is fine, when something goes wrong , there are so many different departments involved, none of which seem to
a) be at all interested
b) be able to help
c) be competant to help...
... and it all takes 10 times longer.
Better to go for a company 'hungry' for your business, than one that arrogantly doesn't care once you are signed up.
To illustrate:
I hadn't heard of IDnet till getting on this forum.
I have had more tangeable help from one of their people than the entire Orange organisation. As soon as I'm disconnected (Orange can't - or won't issue MACs at present) , no guesses for where I'm headed!!!
Plus, as the contracts are just one month minimum not the 12 you see elsewhere, they seem to be backing up their quality of service with a quick 'get out' so you aren't locked into any long term misery... sounds pretty fair.
A while back, el Reg noted that it was cheaper to buy an ISP as a going concern than build up a client base from scratch. Perhaps if Orange showed a bit more concern there would be fewer of their customers going....

Thought I would let you know my threat to cancel my contract did the job. To a certain extent anyway. I am up to 2.3 meg down and .23 up. Which is about where I was before they upgraded me.
The Voip still drops the broadband when I try to use it - so I don't use it. Just got to pluck up the courage to phone them up to cancel it!
