I live less than half a mile from my local exchange, which has recently been upgraded to 21cn. Just before the upgrade, speed tests indicated that I was getting around 6.5mb, which I was quite happy with. After the upgrade, my speed increased to around 7.5mb.
Line tests indicated that my line should be able to get around 17mb, so I simply assumed that because I was only paying for an 8mb line that Orange were capping me at 8.
Phoned Orange to see about upgrading and was told that, yes, if I paid a little extra each month then I would get a faster speed since they were indeed artificially capping my speeds. Orange confirmed I should be able to get around 17mb.
Well, I've gone through the "10 day settling period"', and I'm still getting exactly the same speeds of 7.5mb. Speed tests are consistantly showing 7.5 and don't go above even by the smallest margin, which makes me think that this "cap" hasn't actually been removed.
Spoke to Orange tech support (India) - useless. Just made me do all the kind of things I'd already done (reset router, unplug all phones, replace filters, etc), before just saying well that's as good as you'll get.
I'm still not convinced though, and feel sure that Orange haven't done something to upgrade my account properly. I'm not at home right now, so can't post any line stats, but do remember the ip profile being 9000, but not sure if that indicates anything good or bad.
If the IP Profile is 9000kbps then that is an ADSL2+ WBC profile corresponding to a sync speed of between 10208 kbps and 11359 kbps.
Thanks. I'm not particularly techie, but from what you say, this does suggest I should be getting a faster speed? What would I need to tell Orange to get this problem resolved?
Go to the <a href="http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=3041&id=76445">BT</a> speedtest site http://speedtester.<a href="http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=3041&id=76445">BT</a>.com/ & post back the results.
It really depends what package you were on before. I think 0range now charge £15pm for the upto 20meg service. That's not bad really.
So, speedtester says:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 4316 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 2000-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :9728 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1192 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 8.58:20.83:70.59 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
My router reports the following figures (first column is downstream, second is upstream):
Well you are connected on WBC ADSL2+ but with an attenuation of 23.9dB the router should be connecting at around 18500kbps on an IP Profile of 16000kbps.
The SNRM is a little high at 8.5dB but that may be recovering.
If you have a test socket behind the lower half of the faceplate on your main B.T. socket, then plug the router into that and run the B.T. Speedtester and router stats again.

No, unfortunately, I don't have a test socket on the master.
I seem to be getting absolutely no joy from Orange. Over the past couple of weeks I've been told there is a problem on my line, then that there isn't a problem on my line. I've replaced routers and filters. Disconnected all phones, even had a BT Engineer came out to my house who was told by Orange that I wasn't able to make voice calls - which isn't true, voice is fine).
Just get the feeling that Orange still don't know exactly whats wrong.
Phoned customer services this morning to say I want to leave Orange, only to be told that 8 to 9 Mb is an "acceptable" speed for a 20Mb line (which I'll accept it might be, if I didn't know that I should be getting closer to 15Mb - which is what Orange still admit I should be getting).
Is there anything I can do to escalate this problem, or escape from Orange?
For further info, ran speedtester.BT this morning:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 8518 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 4000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :11816 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1071 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 10000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 11.27:22.16:66.57 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
Did you not notice the differences between the 2 sets of data that you have posted ?
Looks like the connection is still "improving", wait a week and check stats and <a href="http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=3041&id=76445">BT</a> speedtester again
I did notice improvement. How long should I wait though? I was told by Orange that there would be a 10 day "settling period". Well, that run out about two weeks ago.....
Looking at the SNRM data, it looks like your connection is recovering from a noise incident.
So, still having problems with broadband. Two BT OpenReach guys have come out and "fixed" problems witht the line. Last guy said that looking in the exchange, I'm still on 20CN, not 21CN. 'Phoned Orange who disagree. Any way that I can tell? My router (Belkin) doesn't give many stats:
Type Interleave Path
Status Show Time
Downstream Upstream
Data Rate (kbps) 9574 1104
Noise Margin (dB) 15.0 5.9
Attenuation (dB) 22.2 12.7
Output power(dbm) 19.9 12.4
