Just enquired to Orange about an upgrade to my speeds, and was told that I was not very close to my exchange. I currently have a 3Gb speed, but pings to other networks are very erratic, and really slowdown at peak times.
To get around the distance to the exchange, I was told that my line would be changed to an Orange Line, by an Orange engineer. I was told this would be done within the month.
Can anyone explain what actually happens, and how this will improve my connection? I'm just a little skeptical that I was just being told this to shut me up?
I'm concerned about the number of FEC errors. Is this normal? This is after a router reboot and it running for 8 hours.
What are FEC errors?
Check checking various web links, I see to be only able to get 3Mb max based on my line and distance to the exchange. Will a change to an Orange managed line make that much difference? Has anyone with experience of changing to an Orange line advise?
What an abortion of a stats display this router gives you
It takes 15 minutes to decipher what you're actually looking at.
You're on a long line at 50dB attenuation. Forget about FEC errors, those are corrected ones done by having interleave on. CRC errors are more important and those are low.
To be honest you'll get more useful info by running the BT speedtester at www.speedtester.BT.com run that then post the full results back here.
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1831 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2464 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps
I was recently on a 7.5Mb profile, and Orange appear to have done some tinkering, as I'm on 2Mb now! The FEC errors are massively reduced. I was getting millions in a day, it's now around the 1500 mark after a day.
The connection had showed as high as 3500 over the last couple of days, but now has dropped down. I'm guessing they were trying different profiles to see what was stable.
Speed seems oddly quicker and stable today. I'll try it tonight. That's usually when the fun begins...
Those BT speedtester results are correct for the the current connection but with a 50dB attenuation the router should be syncing at around 4800kbps with a 4000kbps IP Profile.
Unless BT have re-routed your line then there is absolutely no possibility of 7.5Mb IP Profile on that attenuation. And Orange can't decide the Profile because it's a BT automatic system. All 0range can do is to manipulate the throughput speed using BT's End User Speed Control facility.
Have you tried plugging the router into the test socket behind the faceplate of the main BT socket and checking the results from there ?
