Hi
We have had a Livebox for sometime now and have never had any problems with it until a few months ago when it would temporarily lose connection to the internet. This has progressively got worse to the point where we would be without the internet for hours at a time. We are running 3 wireless laptops and a wired Xbox.
I've spoken to the Orange technical team and been through all the resetting, new filter etc only to be told on the last call that the Livebox needs to be connected to the main BT socket, and not an extension.
This is inconvenient to say the least as I now have to drag cables across the house just to be able to use my new desktop computer!!! Is this really the case or am I being fed a line?? I can't see how it would suddenly change after all these years. I've been with Orange since freeserve days and it will be a pain to have to move to another provider but I'm on the verge of requesting the MAC code!
Anyone able to help please? Really appreciate some advice.
Thanks

Its always best to avoid using extensions as that can introduce problems & reduce connection speed.
I'd suggest you do as 0range CS suggest just to rule out internal wiring problems. I know this maybe inconvenient but it really is a necessary step. Also a change of filter maybe needed.
0range support is pretty dire & there maybe better options out there for you.

I've already changed the filter and plugged the Livebox into a 2nd extension socket (which is fairly new) to rule out that there was a fault with the original extension but it still wouldn't work. I'm just confused that it has suddenly stopped working - I was hoping that it would be something Orange had done at their end, is that possible?
I've checked the SamKnows site and the code is EAGBT. This explains a lot as we recently enquired with Orange about all the cheap broadband packages we keep getting emails for (currently paying a very expensive £19.99), and also with Sky, to be told it isn't available in our area! Orange did say that it would be though very soon (how soon I wonder??)
We are seriously considering BT as a phone and internet package will be considerably cheaper, and I guess they are the only other option available to us!!
Thanks for your help

With such a small number of residential properties covered by that exchange not much will happen.
BT is not the only option for you. The likes of Xilo and ADSL24 might be worth contacting and will provide far better support than 0range & probably BT as well.
I still think you should try connecting directly to the master socket and preferably to the test socket inside if you have the type with the split front.
We are using the main socket at the moment as it's that or no internet which just isn't an option, especially with 2 teenagers!
Guess I will have to put up with the cables until I decide what to do.
Thanks for your help
There is an alternative to landline broadband in East Essex (new transmitter is due I understand to serve Colchester hinterland): http://www.fibrewifi.com/. I joined at Xmas after a series of problems with the local Orange kit in my exchange and at well over 5 miles from my local transmitter get over 10Mbps up and download, and up to 16 Mpbs on the download off-peak. Average downtime usually less than 1 hour a week, and most weeks negligible. It has the capacity for 25 up/down. Problem is that whilst the monthly fee is competitive, you ideally need a good clear line of site to transmitter, and there are up front costs for the installation of a receiver on the roof, and a cable modem as it otherwise operates as for cable. Out of an urban area and if you're not very close to the exchange and are without access to cable I think it's difficult to beat. Something to perhaps to bear in mind if you have on-going problems by reason of a poor connection on the external line.
