Hi to all - expect this has been discussed a million time b4 but im new to this site and at the end of my tether trying to discuss this with Orange at the end of the phone. Basically when im on call of duty in the evenings my connection on screen keeps flicking from around 2 bars down to red which makes the game totally unplayable. The facts - During the mornings games seem to play with out to much of a issue, past tea time (when i want to use it) the lag is so bad its undescribable. Im on oranges 8mb package, i ran the test that i see on here with speedtest.net this comes in at Download 1.73mbs / Upload0.27mbs and Ping312 ( sorry this means nothing 2 me). All i know is that i have been with this provider since the freeserve / wanadoo days and when i was on old the 1mgb package that came 3 with my work phones this seemed alot better than what they are dishing out and charging 4 these days. To conclude i feel that when my contracts finish on my work / private phones / i will be enlisting the services of another provider as i run my own business and wouldnt dream of providin such a shoddy service! If any1 could help would be great as im fed up of going round my m8's to play on his far superior BT connection ps are there any other tests i should b running?
Sorry forgot to add - yes i am on cable and not wireless, modem is speed touch 330 (thompson) which i was provided with around 7 Years ago. The last time that i changed contract they provided me with big wireless modem but i wish to stay on cable, due to every1 that i know that was on wireless have all returned back to cable! Thankyou so much to every1 that has taken the time to post back, hopefully i'll b able to find the solution on this site as trying to contact Orange via phone is just to painful!

The router you were supplied should have 1 or 2 connections for ethernet & would be a far better option than that old ADSL modem. I'd give it a try first and at least you could get some stats out which might help us help you.
Hi Tim - doen as you suggested i have now installe d the gigasetse572 box that Orange provided - after a hour on the phone to Orange got it all up and running and now i have opened another can of worms! How do i connect my internet cable(xbox) when i have used the ethernet port on the rear of my pc and there is only 1 on the back of the new box which has been used to connect cable to pc. The old sppeedtouch was connected via usb leaving the ethernet on the back of pc free for my xbox lead. Iwent out and bought a Mentor broadband router and to be totally honest the set up is impossible for me and my wife to complete after 4hrs we have given in. Does any1 know if there is some sort of double ethernet block that can plug directly into the modem and requires no set up. To be honest i cant believe if they change from usb to ethernet that they dont put more ethernets on the reaer of the modem. Sorry to sound like a complete noob but im sure my pain can only supply help to others! Cheers Tel
New modem and all new ethernet cables now installed and has made no difference what so ever, here are my latest figures?
why is Orange so bad, they really do not deserve anyones business! All i want to do is come home after work and chill out on the xbox, cant wait till my contracts end.

The router that 0range supplied to me had 2 ethernet ports but obviously not the same as yours.
I bought a Netgear switch to give me extra ports like this one:- http://www.ebuyer.com/product/35437 . Should work fine for you. 1 port connects to the router and just plug the others into it.
I don't know exactly where the stats will be in your router but there should be a status page somewhere easily found.
Not all speedtest.net sites give good resuts , try Milton Keynes as an example. I found Gloucester particularly bad for ping.
