It's worth taking up Jonathan's offer , at least you're in contact with more senior UK based staff and they can action things for you.
Tim
I'll first give the replacement modem a chance, when it comes. It's the last thing to eliminate, equipment-wise, from my end. If I get no joy I'll contact him.
Three drop-outs yesterday one in the afternoon and 2 in the early evening.
The new router arrived today, a Siemens Gigaset SE 572 WLAN. Unfortunately it doesn't seem possible to make it work with Routerstats, I can view the stats from the browser but it won't let you navigate directly to that page. Putting in the URL, of course, takes you to the password screen but after entering it it only forwards you to the settings page instead of the page you asked for.
I'll just have to keep an eye on it.
On the plus side my speed has gone up, the DLM has kicked in, 2Mbps yesterday and 4Mbps today.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get Routerstats to work with a Siemens Gigaset SE572 and if so how?
After a day and a half of trouble free internet, I got home tonight and checked my speed and it was just over 3Mbs+ (it was at 6Mbs+ earlier in the day) and the connection started dropping. I've had to write in down.
12.05 speed at 3Mbs +
12.27 connection drops
12.32 connection drops
12.49 connection drops
12.51 connection drops
12.54 connection drops
1.01 Can't log in to the router, won't go passed the login screen. Router reset.
1.04 connection drops
1.14 Can't log in to the router, won't go passed the login screen. Router reset.
1.18 connection drops
1.28 -1.45 connection at 6Mbs and stable

You don't want the DG834G V5 as it'll lose you 2-3meg on download over a router with a Broadcom chipset. The V4 is fine and is still available.
I've got the Netgear DGN2000 - aka Netgear 300N - which is really fine. Costs around £65. I gained 2meg over the Livebox & my existing router because of it's chipset.
That is a constantly noisy line for the periods that you've posted.
Mine varies 0.5dB. In the evening it begins to drop but only in 0.5dB steps. Yours is dropping in up to 3dB steps before massive drops from 10dB to zero.
Is there any noise on the phone line ?
Dial 17070 (use an analogue corded phone) select option 2.
If you have any noise, no matter how quiet, then report the fault to BTbut do not mention any broadband problem

I've been in contact with BT a few times, they already know about the internet problems I'm afraid but, I've confirmed that there is noise on the line when I'm having problems and it is there when it is just the phone plugged in.
I've done all their tests, that I can and with the noise on the line with nothing but the phone attached I should hopefully avoid an engineer's fee. I wasn't too worried about the fee until I saw how much it had gone up.
The socket and wiring must be about 30 years old so I'm hoping they'll replace it.

Have you done a test using the 'test' socket ? - i.e. the one behind the BT faceplate?
If you have and there's still noise on the line, then I can't see why BT should charge you for it; it seems to be an issue that they're responsible for.

It doesn't have a test socket, it was installed in the early 1980s.
I've run out things to try my end but as there is noise on the line with nothing but the phone attached (I've tried a different phone as well) and the problem is happening when most things in the house are off or in standby, I'm fairly satisfied I'm not to blame.

I would agree....with the installation that you have, you've done all the tests possible without the sort of equipment BT use.
