Did anyone ask to keep a dial-up account so that their FS/Wanadoo/Orange email address could still be used? And did Orange honour that?
Thats actually automatic. Accounts are almost never deleted, I don't think the people you call actually have the power to delete them completely.
When closed, a broadband account reverts to pay as you go. After 90 days of no dialup access it's suspended but can be reopened for a further 90 days through the website. You can do this indefinitely really. Just remember, you can only send through Orange when on one of their connections, otherwise you need the SMTP server of the new ISP. Webmail should always work though for both sending and receiving.

I have requested that exactly this takes place when my final paid-for (but not received) month of broadband service terminates.
After about 7 years of using a freeserve email address, I can't afford to lose the account. (though I wouldn't miss the spam ) I plan to ping the dial-up once in a while to keep it active, a handy test that the modem still works just in case my new
8Mb-working-without-a-spot-of-bother broadband goes all Orange on me.
When I discussed this on the phone with Orange CS, I got the same impression, like Elhana says, that the broadband cancellation team only had the ability to terminate the broadband account. However, it is probably prudent to stipulate a reversion to PAYG as a requirement in writing when you terminate your broadband.
What we all will need to know though is the PAYG modem pool number - I doubt that the original freeserve one I have is still valid....
PayG a/c is perpetual... (at least till Orange will last)...the only thing is that you need to access it frequently, or else, it will expire (like any other free email a/c)...
