I should be so grateful for help.
I am a novice MAC user - running OSX 10.5.8, connecting to Orange using a livebox and an ethernet cable. (Airport is switched off.)
I connected at first with no difficulty but when waking the machine from sleep and sporadically when switching on, the connection failed.
I checked the network settings in System preferences and when connected they were as set out in the Orange Help article on checking your ethernet, proxy and network settings ie Using DHCP and all other values & settings correct.
I noticed that when the connection failed the settings were showing a self-assigned IP address starting 169. I have therefore tried changing the settings to both 'Using DHCP with manual address' and "Manually.' In both these cases this results in the network settings showing the ethernet as connected, but I cannot access the internet as Safari still gives the message that internet sites cannot be displayed because the computer is not connected to the internet!!
The other things I have tried without success are turning off IPv6 and UpnO in the Livebox configuration.
The only way to get Safari to connect is to unplug the ethernet cable, wait a few moments and plug it back in again.
I apologise for the length of this post but I am at my wits end. I should be very grateful if there are experienced MAC users out there who can tell me what I am doing wrong......
Thanks in anticipation.
