Hi There
I've been using the Free Broadband that Orange supplied with my Dad's phone contract for a while now that says speeds of 2MB should be achieved.
After doing Speedtest.net's test the best I have recieved in the lst few days has been
I am using a Netgear router (DGN2000) and have used automatic setup just inputing the username and password. Is there any way to speed this up as it is really annoying me as I play games online and it also gives me slow streaming time for Youtube and BBC iPlayer. I also find it impossible to do live broadcasts between friends on Skype also.
If you would like me to do any tests etc to help in anyway then please reply.

Try the speedtest at non-peak times as it's highly likely that the network is swamped during the evening. If you get approx 1.5Mbps at , say, 1am then general overload of the BT network will be the cause.

The router is connected to the master socket. It is upstairs connected to the main computer in the house and the lead to the master socket runs about 30 feet downstairs. Don't particularly want to move the Router downstairs because then it would have the ethernet plugged into it
Ok, if the router is connected to the master socket, then it should be easy for you to take off the bottom plate and plug the router into the test socket under the face plate. Then re-test.

Ihave no idea what type the cable is. All I know is that it is roughly 30-40ft long and has the small telephone connection on both ends that fits into the back of the router.
Sorry I'm not being overly helpful here.
As for the test socket I am reluctant to try this as it is not my house (parents) and if I mess up when unscrewing it and looking I'll not be in the best books of the family. Facebook addicts they are.
No problems with that but you could eliminate any problems with your wiring with the test socket.
If there is an extension wired in on the back of the master socket front plate, then this may be causing noise and may affect your speeds. Using the test socket will eliminate all possible wiring issues.
It really is a simple job, unplug the router connection, take out the 2 screws holding the front plate, carefully pull out in case it is wired up, then plug the connection into the socket that is behind.
Then do your tests again. If you get faster speeds, then it is your wiring to blame, if not then it is just your line and the distance from your exchange.
Also it is better to use a longer ethernet cable rather than a lengthy modem/router cable.

Had you done speedtests previously that actually got anywhere near the 2meg rate and now you're seeing a dropoff?
The ping you get of 36ms is pretty good. You could try a different server like Milton Keynes and Paris as the servers can give some varying results.
To be honest with a download speed of approx 1meg you must be connecting (syncing) at 1.4meg or thereabouts anyway I'd have thought.
It would be useful to go to this site http://www.samknows.com/broadb.../index.php and take the exchange mapping option , might give you some clues as to how far from the exchange you are and potential speeds.
