originally on an up to 8 meg package with O I decided to look around for better ISP packages so called O to get the MAC code. Whilst I was happy on a 5.5 meg attainable speed I thought I could do better.
Getting through to retentions I was told about the "up to 20 Meg package" and looking on my account page found I could get 9 meg - wow - tempting. Yes I was told, we'll put you on a new network in the exchange and you'll get 9 meg. I fell for it
Guess what, the next day my speed fell to 0.8meg - yes one tenth what I was offered. I waited for the stabilisation no change. One month later, over 15 calls to customer care, 10 to tech support, repeated "do the Three speedtests" setc, checking the line [ok] and the best yet " we now recommend 15 days for stabilisation so wait a bit more"!! Idiot, the 15 days had gone past. No return calls from Fault team.
I keep telling them it's not a line fault - you've screwed up the ISP limit and it needs releasing.
Meanwhile on my account page it says guess what - my speed estimate is now 5.5meg. But ofcourse I'm not now getting that 'cos they've screwed the system up.
My suspicion:
My exchange is not 21C enabled. It's impossible to get what Orange offer - don't get me started on the "up to " caveat. The 9 meg quoted on the account page is impossible. And to cap [no pun inteded] it all they have failed to set up the new account properly and unlock my IP profile. Basically they are incompetent. I now understand why they score so low on customer satisfaction.
Conclusion: DON'T GET SUCKERED INTO CHANGING PACKAGE
Wish i had seen this site before i upgraded from 8meg to 20, i was happy with the 3-4 meg i was getting, but since upgrade dec 09 have been lucky if i can get near 1meg, average download is max at 100kbs.
no help from all the phone calls to Orange, so not happy to be paying more for a slower service
I think this has happened to me now. I was on the old 8mb contract (£5 a month) and was getting nearly all of it (approx 7.5mb). I upgraded my phone in May and thought I'd do the same with my broadband.
After the stabilisation period was up, I only really noticed a (minor) change in my upload speed, my download speed barely changed.
Here we are a few months down the line and all I get is
Downstream Line Rate : 4096 kbps
Upstream Line Rate : 605 kbps
My router stats have been stuck on this for a few weeks now and I used to see them fluctuate, maybe they've capped me, but I'm not happy considering I'm paying twice as much for half the service I had before.
Phoned the helpdesk, but they just said they'd run some tests and I would receive a text message when they're done (I think!), but I'm not holding out much hope.
Now, I feel like the whole 20mb connection from Orange is a massive con, as I'm now tied into this contract for another 15 months.

It really depends on how far from the exchange you are and it sounds like ADSL2+ is no advantage for you because of your line length.....but 0range don't make that clear when they upgrade you.
Can you post your attenuation figures, they'll be on the same page where you found the Line Rate stats above.

thanks for your reply. Seems they've halved my speed again...
