I've been on Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange for around 6 years and it has always been a reliable service at good speed, even though I live in a small village about 3k from the local exchange. For the last 7 days the broadband speed has really dropped away and is painfully slow. I read some of the other posts on this board and went to speedtester.BT.com and ran that.
I'm using a Livebox connected via the Inventel USB wireless adapter that came with it. I've just borrowed an ethernet cable today and connected to the Livebox with that, but it hasn't made any difference.

Any ideas what has gone wrong? I've been getting download speeds of 750kbps+ for as long as I can remember and from what all this says it seems like it should be capable of that, so why the sudden slowdown? Thanks for any advice

You're suffering from the infamous "stuck IP Profile"......only Orange can contact BT to resolve this....it needs BT's manual intervention.
I heard how terrible and unhelpful the telephone customer support is, so I emailed in my speed test results. Not sure if they've done anything to sort it out with BT, but now I'm getting
Download speed achieved during the test was - 571 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :4736 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)

So better, but some margin for improvement yet. At least the IP profile has been sorted and seems to be right for the Livebox stats. Sending another email. And another, and another until it's right.

But you're only getting 571kbps throughput with a synch speed of 4736kbps. So yes it is better than the 96kbps that you had.....but only just.
