I have had 8mb Orange broadband for years and like others on this board, suffer from terrible connection to my PS3 in the evening.
During the day, I get great speeds and can connect to games with no problem.
At night, I still get good speeds (4mb to 6mb) but cannot connect to online games.
I just phoned Orange for my weekly moan and they are now saying it must be a problem with the livebox as its a few years old now. I struggle with this as how can it be good during the day and rubbish at night. Anyhow, they are sending me out a Siemens router to try (free of charge) to see if that makes any difference. I still believe they are throttling gaming but somehow still providing good download speeds.
Anyway, will be interesting to see if a different router makes any difference.
Yes, just the bog standard <a href="http://btbb.at/theside?LID=21">BT</a> line with the <a href="http://www.paccodes.co.uk" target="PAC">Orange</a> router at the end of it.
Post the results from www.speedtester.BT.com and the stats from your router.
I do get depressed reading this forum as nobody ever seems to get a happy outcome!
I to am struggling with gaming connections. Been with Orange / freeserve / wanadoo for years and no problem. 3 months back I upgraded to 8mb, and in the process an 18month contract (same time as Orange phone). I have had unbelievable problems since with gaming lag and connection which is my primary use.
I never had this when I only had 2mb.
Like other people, my download speeds are generally alright, 5-6mb, but my connection for online gaming is diabolical.
I've tried all the tricks, ports, DMZ etc, I run my own Belkin router.
How can my speed be so good, but connection be so bad?

Pretty much have the same problem.
I used that new Pingtest.net
And my reading from speedtest.net
It's so bad, and I can't even see what the problem must be. I've moaned at Orange for months now, you'd think they'd just give me a good connection by now.
EDIT: And my results from http://www.speedtester.BT.com/
Download speedachieved during the test was - 4209 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
Phoned to get my MAC code today and spoke to a female customer services operator. She kept on asking me if I could be transferred to the technical support. I said no way as this has been rumbling on for 6 months and nothing has changed. She then asked what isp I was joining, told her Sky and she said I would have the same problem with them and it would cost me more money. Told her it was a risk I will take and I very much doubt it as my neighbour has Sky and suffers no gaming problems in the evening. She then said it must be something with my phoneline, told her its not as that was checked and was ok. This went on and on and on.
Ended up me basically losing it (never usually happens, I'm very chilled) and demanding the code. This female was so rude and obnoxious its unbelievable.
When I get my Sky broadband connected and (fingers crossed) it works in the evening I will be straight on the phone to Orange to complain.

That indicates congestion/contention at your exchange which could be induced either by BT or Orange......no doubt each would blame the other.
Your synching at maximum, 8128kbps, so should see a throughput of at least 6800kbps rather than 4209kbps.
Hi
I to have been with wanado, freeserve and now Orange for years. Since last Nov. evening PC play of COD4 etc. is a real test of patience. Just as you describe tests show up/down load speeds ok day and evening (slightly less in the evening) BUT.....
PINGS spike in a wild manner around 6.00pm onwards, they vary from 46-145 then 98-52 making game play a jerk fest.
To be fair to Orange tech help (via a reply to a post on this forum) they have been excellent and the best customer service i have experienced (no i dont work for them lol). I have been sent new router and upgraded to 8mb but still no improvement.
In fact so far this week it has been the worst ever. I can't understand why speed shows ok but the packet flow is so unstable for gaming in the evening.
I am also looking around for better broadband, a pity as this comes as a package with my mobile, so come Jan 2010 Orange will also lose my phone custom as well something that i was happy with... still never mind
Good luck with Sky
Switched from Orange to Sky today and for the first time in months I have been able to enjoy a game of online COD4 on my PS3 between 6pm and 11pm.
So after Orange telling me that the same problem would happen with another user was complete garbage and I was on an Orange LLU. My advice for anyone who wants to use their broadband for evening online gaming and are suffering problems similar to mine is to change ISP ASAP.
Same boat as everyone else really. I play COD4 on the PC online in the evening, it was fine up until 4 weeks ago. I wasn't connecting, getting kicked for packet loss etc. My speeds are decent 5/6MB from a max of 7MB, but the ping spikes wildly throughout the evening between around 7pm and 10pm. It makes gaming, watching streaming video impossible.
Been onto india and I'm getting the usual runaround. have to supply them with another set of BT speedtests at different times of the day.
What's changed in 4 weeks! I've been with them from the Feeserve days. I'm using an early Wanadoo Livebox with Inventel receiver - could that be it?

It could be but I changed out my livebox and it made no difference. Orange may have inadequate equipment in your exchange so cannot cope with evening demand - even though it was LLU. I'm quite sure that's what my problem was. 4 days on and still had no problems online gaming with Sky.
I also quoted a whole bunch of pingtest.net readings to Orange, showing how my ping went Sky high during the evening. I was told these were not valid because pingtest/speedtest.net readings applied to LLU customers only - can anyone confirm this? i was told the only stats that were valid were from BT speedtest. Would that not only confirm my speed - not the quality of my connection?
