ok guys 20 meg is here and believe me its going to cause a lot of problems and going to create a lot of angry customers so i just want to explain speed to you to help you understand where you have heard wrong
first of all there is a headline speed - this is the speed we advertise and its NOT the speed you are going to get
secondly we advise you of the access speed this is the speed we predict you will get but is NOT garanteed
lastly is the thoughput speed - this is the speed you will recieve at your end at your computer and honistly your thoughput speed and you access speed should be the same regradeless of what anyone says
ofcom have a speed code of conduct and i would like to point out this is a volantary policy andif you dont get the speed we say you still cant cancel - ofcom website is very interesting when i comes to speed as it states facts about speed like 9% of the uk broadband customers on a 8 meg headline package recieve speeds of over 6 meg yes that 9% so if you think your going to recieve 20 meg keep dreaming
so this is how to tell what speed your going to get:
first of all what system are you on? orange will not be providing IPStream customers with up to 20 meg broadband there still only up to 8 meg - you can check what network you are on through www.samknows.co.uk
secondly ofcom recommend the BTW availibility check to check your speed this can be found at www.thinkbroadband.co.uk down the left hand side - suerfast broadband uses ADSL2+ so thats what you need to be looking at
and lastly all our packages coming with up to 20 meg speeds and unlimited downloads so dont think the less the speed the less the price its doesnt work like that
so there you have it 20 meg aint all its cracked up to be how ever all providers are level pegging when it comes to speed Orange can give you the same speed as any other provider

Can someone please also advise me if it's worth switching to the 20 Meg service. I really don't want to commit to another 12/18 month contract with Orange unless my speeds get better.
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 19.8
Attenuation (dB) : 13.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 13517
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 8061 605
I usually get just under a speed of 7Mb on a good day.
Yes with an attenuation of 13.5dB you'll see good throughput speeds.....provided Orange make the changeover correctly; you're happy to tie-in to another contract and you will really benefit from that fast a connection......for most people it's a "must have" broadband status thing.
For the majority, including some downloaders, 8Mb is adequate provided it's a consistent throughput.

Thanks for your response.
I do download a lot and get good speeds at the moment, so I'm debating whether I want another contract with Orange. I usually use the "I'm out of a contract so give me my MAC code" trump card when they're mucking me around.
Having a faster connection would be good though and I don't see why I'm paying just under £18.00 a month just for a unlimited 8Mb connection which they don't even offer anymore.

ok the attainable download from you router is your access speed so thats what your router is recieveing. some people will argue that the info shown is thoughtput speed but i would say its access speed
also personally i dont trust kitz maybe because i havnt used it but i have proved people wrong who have used it but i trust the BTW availablity checker is on the left side of the screen at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ as this is what ofcom advise
all i can say is the Orange packages are good if you are on LLU just if your on IPStream they not good but i must stress if you have a business and you charge someone £10 for a product and the supplier of that product charges your £15 your going to put your prices up hence the extra charge and only upto 8 meg for IPStream customers
finally if you have questions your best pm me so i can reply 1 at a time as i have never been good with organisation

No, I'll argue that "attainable download rate" is the speed you would be able to get with the shown stats under best/perfect conditions but you can never receive the attainable, because the conditions are never 100% perfect.......it never happens. The synch speed is the only speedstat from the router that is of any consequence.
I found out that they only offer the 20 Meg service with the livebox for the max package, all other packages use a siemens router. I'm not happy about that, I'm not sure why I can't use my livebox which I configured nicely for port forwarding, my Wii , ipod etc.
Does anyone know what siemens model you have to use and is it inferior to the livebox? What would be the point in making an existing customer change their livebox router?
What do you think the chances are of Orange letting me keep my livebox if I switched to the 20 Meg service if I waved the "I may as well switch to o2 (now Sky) if I have to change my router as it's cheaper" card in their face?
mizz, I am pretty sure if you explained that you do not wish to change the settings, and the reasons why, that they would allow you to keep using the livebox. All they need to do is turn off the second line. However in my opinion the Siemans router is better than the Livebox

Thanks. Do you know what Siemens router they're offering? I'm not bothered about them turning off the second line seeing as I've never used it, it's not even activated.

the conditions from the main BT socket to your router are normally perfect as long as there is no extensions in the way. it unsually for me to find a speed issue caused from BT socket
