Hi all,
I think something to bear in mind as well is (as far as I am aware).... GPRS masts have a certain amount of "slots" which can be filled and only 1 out of 8 of them is dedicated to data transfer, if some of the other 7 are free then data will go through it - but the moment someone connects a call then it will automatically drop the data to prioritise the voice.
In newer technology connections such as 3G and HSDPA (3G+) the masts are not restricted to 8 slots and have a much more dynamic structure, however the priority is still voice.
This would account for situations where you may have fine reception for voice calls, but often have a problem connecting to data. Have you tried connecting at 4am in the morning? (obviously not recommending this for a normal day!) hardly anyone is making calls and data connection is much better.

Oh,
back to the original question posted by bamba - the only other way I can think would be to find a network which allows you to use your phone as a modem for connection.
With some phones you can sync up to your pc via bluetooth (10m-15m range) and have it as your modem. Put put the phone in a place where it gets good reception and hey presto! This is extremely elaborate but you did ask the question!!
You could get a phone dedicated for it (you can pick up some cheap hsdpa handsets with bluetooth for about £50 on payg, and some of them have pretty good data bundles) The other thing to bear in mind is that some networks prioritise mobile broadband traffic over handset data traffic - so it might be just as slow anyway.

hello all, ive been running a 3 moblie broadband dongle for some time which has become progresivly slower to point which i'd like to smash it.
just had delivery of my Orange dongle which i took out when renewing my phone contract, was expecting some improvement but when used down stairs in my house it is still hard to get more than one bar in gprs, up stairs is ok,but very directional.
now, 3 do a wireless router thing for there dongle to plug in to , is there any thing else available that will allow me to put the dongle where it can get a good signal away from my lap top ??

Hi, I have just signed up to this site becasue of some significant, long term and unresolved problems with Orange Broadband. However on browsing through I notice that there are also some issues with Mobile Broadband.
I have been using Orange Mobile Broadband for more than a year now and am generally very impressed and satisfied with it.
I do not see it as a permament replacement for hardwired DSL broadband connection. It is, however, an invaluable service when I am travelling or working away.
I keep a boat on the south coast and I do tend to work onthe boat when I can get away with it. The service is fantastic. I can use it for pleasure and watch BBC IPlayer or BBC livewatch through the mobile broadband network.
It is also fine for uploading fair size websites and demonstrating stuff to customers.
the reliability of the connection has been fantastic. I often work for many hours and the connection NEVER breaks.
I frequently am using it for more than 25G per month and all that for 15 pounds a month! Sounds a bargain.
Of course there is a downside! It does not work well when I am on the train. And it is not very usable in London. But I can live with that.
I also have to say that the customer support from Orange mobile and Orange mobile broadband has also bee fantastic over the last two years since moving to them.
As you will read in my other posts this NOT my experience from Orange Broadband. I find them to be technically inept, lacking any form of custoemr service and impossible to get to resolve issues.
If any of you have specific problems with Orange Mobile then message me. I might be able to help.
BTW. I have tried using USB extensions (as supplied with the new USB dongles) but I find these are not very good. I use the USB dongle directly attached and that gives me the best performance.
