Been using freeserver/orange broadband for years. Never had any issue using smtp.freeserve.co.uk to send our own domain specific emails. Just today for no reason whatsoever it has decided to stop allowing us to send pdf files. Any other file/attachment is ok, just pdf's. comes back with the error code 550 5.7.1 message content rejected. Can still send emails fine with excel or word attachments just this. pdf file size is not huge and in fact worked this morning - an absolute nightmare and driving me totally nuts. Any ideas ?[/list]
If your ISP differs from the one you want to send from (eg. Freeserve is your ISP but you are sending from (say) an AOL address) then that may be the clue.
Error 550 as I understand it is the code which says smtp is blocked because you are trying to send via an smtp address which differs from your ISP's smtp address.
after a nightmarish couple of days with this, we got round the issue by signing up to SMPT2go.com - doesnt matter which ISP you use or which domain name email you use - sends anything to anywhere at all times with no error messages. Ok so we have had to pay a bit of money but £30 or so for a year of hassle free email sending - its worth it to me!
What has really frustrated me is that we have used freeserve/orange for years and i mean years, then all of a sudden it stopped working. If we had been using AOL or BT i wouldnt have been surprised as they are notoriously difficult but Orange has always been so reliable. We are in the IT field so it is not as if we are naive about what can go wrong with email but this issue was frustrating beyond belief!
Anyway, thanks for getting back to me.... didnt know this forum existed and it has been great reading through things.
This SMTP problem re-occurs from time to time and drives me mad - This Orange connection is not mine - I stay at a friends and have to reset my 6 Email accounts through Outlook Express every time I stay over... A PAIN !!
Today I got the 550 5.7.1 "Message Content Rejected" - well I had been replying to emails all week with the same guy over again - then all of a sudden this happens - looking at the email address / content nothing seemed a problem or out of the ordinary (no attachements or images) - So I even went plain text (from HTML) email hoping the ASCII text would get through ! NO NO NO
After about 30 minutes looking into settings, Google - I picked up on that the email subject was "I Screwed Up!" (this person had send something incorrectly a few hours earlier). I deleted the word 'SCREWED' and guess what.... the email flew out of my outbox this time through Orange's SMTP !!

So looks like they filter the content quite heavily !! "[/b]

I noticed this a long while ago. I haven't tried recently but in the past I found that e-mails sent through Orange's smtp server didn't get through with the word 'test' in the subject field.
Just did some tests. the word 'test' no longer triggers the mail to be blocked but a message with the same subject line as tomtom999 sent brought an immediate error message from the smtp server. So obviously there is some content filtering.
