I have had regular contact with Orange technical support department. We have had regular back and fourths regarding my internet connection speed. After consistently being promised a mythical ‘text message’ from an engineer, I finally lost patience and escalated the call. A supervisor called me and advised that due to the number of other Orange customers recently added to the exchange, I can now only receive a maximum of 0.5 megs. Obviously this is through no fault of my own and presumably they still expect me to pay the maximum amount each month.
I work from home and need a good internet connection, the one I receiving not Three weeks ago. Any ideas where I can take this?
The answer from Orange would seem to indicate that it's a small exchange and an IPStream connection but I can't see that would give you a 500kbps connection all the time if you were getting better than that until recently. Orange's broadband customer base is reducing not increasing.
I live in a small village. Been with Wanadoo\ Orange etc for years. My Orange connection recently slowed to an untenable 0.13 Mbs. The guy next door is on AOL and gets nearly 2 Mbs. The person next to him gets nearly 1 Mbs. Technical support in India were very frustrating and totally annoying. They just don't listen and care even less. I will be looking for a service provider with a UK Call centre - probably o2 (now Sky). I have asked Orange for my MAC.
"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

Glen. That sounds suspiciously like the same thing that has happened to me. If that's the case, Orange deserve to lose all their custom. They just lost mine. Thanks for the info.
No, that doesn't give the data that's required....also no speed test site is totally reliable.
Keep trying the BT speedtester, it does get busy at times. Make sure that you're using the broadband username id.....it's similar to surname.orangehome.co.uk@fs

Okay thanks - I can get past the log-in sequence now, but it seems to stall on this section below:
I've left it running for over an hour and nothing seems to happen. Am I leaving it long enough or do you think there may be a problem with it?
Okay, finally got this working, doesn't seem to like Firefox for some reason.
Results are as follows:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 458 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :576 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 288 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps
I have spoken to Orange this evening who confirmed the IP Profile for my line is actually 'above 2 meg'. The advisor I spoke said he is sending off the details to get the profile increased and BT to investigate this at the exchange. Does this sound correct?

Well this shows that the router is synced at 576kbps and the appropriate IP Profile of 500kbps has been allocated.
For some strange reason, it looks like you have been put on a FIXED 0.5Mb connection. Look at this link towards the bottom of the page >>>>

I spoke to Orange yesterday evening as they tried to call me and left a message. The chap I spoke to yesterday evening advised me that he would be 'completing a form' to ensure I would receive the requisite speed. Fine I thought, at last we are getting somewhere.
This morning I received a text from Orange saying: 'Hi from Orange. We've an update on your broadband problem - can you call us on 08448 738586 when you're near your PC. Thanks.' So I called them and was advised they had tested the line and found no fault on the line and that the maximum speed the line could hold is 0.5 megs. This is despite being told by yesterday's advisor and from BT that my line can handle above 2 megs (7.5 according to BT). We went round and round in circles, with the advisor only offering me a chance to have the line tested again - presumably to find no fault etc.
