Hi. I'm new on this forum. Already complained to Ofcom and waiting for Orange response. I had a good 6-6.5Mbps for about 1 year. Now between 18:00-00:00 I'm getting 400Kbps... I wrote few emails to Orange. Here is one of the replays from them:
"I have looked into the speed issue that you have been reporting and
whilst the speeds you have been experiencing over the weekends are
slower than during the week they are still within acceptable limits for
broadband. When you completed the test on the www.speedtester.BT.com
website the results displayed will have shown the acceptable speeds for
broadband connections, for example for a connection of 2MB or higher
speeds low as 400kbps are acceptable.
I have ran some testing on the line and can not find any causes of the
drop in speed, the most likely explanation is that it is caused by
contention in your local exchange.
Contention is the term used to describe is the maximum number of other
people you will have to share the connection to your local exchange
with. Orange has a contention ratio of 50:1 this means that the maximum
number of people you could be sharing the connection with at anytime is
49 other people. If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then
your download speed could drop hugely. This is a limitation of the
technology used to allow broadband connections in the UK and as such
there is little we can do to prevent it."
Let me mention that I Have internet Max which is up to 8Mbps and I can get stable 6.5Mbps. 400Kbps is about 8% of what I should get and they say that: IT IS ACCEPTABLE SPEED!!! This must be one of the biggest scums I've ever seen.
I'm thinking about taking them to the court. Is there anybody that actually started a case against Orange services? If so - how did it go?
I think that if I'm getting 8% of service then I should pay 8% of the price. Can't see the reason to pay for Max package when I'm getting less then 2Mbps one.
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 7936 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 439 kbps
2. Assured Rate Test: -provides background information.
Assured Rate IP profile on your line is - 600 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 295 kbps
I have been having this exact same problem since 2 months ago. My 2mb broadband starter package worked perfect for 10 months then suddenly, quite randomly it then began connecting at the speed of a 512k connection every evening between 6pm and midnight. Tech suppost is utterly useless, I did request a MAC code but could not decide on another isp so decided to upgrade to the Orange Max package. Now the router says I am connected at 8MB but I am still capped to 2mb speeds during the day and a 512k connection (half a meg) in the evening!
These are my results from BT Speed Test: (in the evening)
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 436 kbps
2. Assured Rate Test: -provides background information.
Assured Rate IP profile on your line is - 600 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 354 kbps
and during the day:
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1823 kbps
2. Assured Rate Test: -provides background information.
Assured Rate IP profile on your line is - 600 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1621 kbps
So much for my up to 8mb max package! I have also done exchange tests and I should be able to get download speeds of 5mb so why are Orange capping me? Should I contact offcom?
