Hi all,
Last month I was on a 1 meg package (from the very old freeserve) but now that package is out of date and now I am forced to move to the 8meg starter package. i was hoping that my speed of 1.1 meg would have improved a bit. I realise that being around 5km (by wire) from my exchange does not help and I wont get over 2 meg, but ages ago BT engineers said 1.5 perhaps 2 meg is possible.
So when they moved the package over and did the 10 day trial it came up with a measly 1 meg still. Even though my downloads are at a constant 120kbs and it always connects at a constant 1.1 meg. Is there any way of changing the setting/ or perhaps reinstall speedtouch 330 to imrpove the speed a bit? I emailed them but they blatently just copy and pasted the text from my account.
I was just hoping for a little more... : s
well firstly you need to post your stats from your router so we can see waht's what!!!
As most peaple would say though Orange are rubbish with there speeds as you look from my post daz79 yes 5 km is not really good but what can you do.where is your nearest exchange may is ask, also you can goto www.samknows.com to find out about the exchange your at and what ips there for you.
If you check this graph, you'll see that at 5Km your attenuation is around 70dB which on an ADSL "up to 8Mb" connection should get you about 1.5Mbit download speed MAXIMUM, that is, if you have a very good line.
I did a BT speedtester and it came up with:-
Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 2000 k
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 1216 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 995 kbps
The very strange thing is, for the first time this morning it connected at 1.3Mbs and seems to download around 1.5 MB now???? I have never had a different speed before. Maybe it does take some time for the package change to kick into action?
I downloaded dr speedtouch to get the stats from the router but when I double click on it, it doesnt load?
Anyway thigns are looking up, but I would like to carry this through to see if I can change anything,
Did Orange not send you a livebox as part of the upgrade ?
You'll find a router (rather than the Speedtouch modem) will probably give you a better result.
Also can you see that your IP profile is higher than your sync ?.....it's possible that this means the automatic process in the exchange has stuck at 2000kbps.
Keep a check on this by running the BT speedtester once a day, if it stays at 2000kbps with a lower DSL connection rate then it has definitely stuck and it needs manual intervention by BT but you'll need to go through Orange to do that.
I presume it will take a short while for any hardware to come,,, perhaps next week.
Ill keep you guys posted on events in the near future like BT speedtester, and thanks for focused advise.
