I joined Orange from Wanadoo 56k, then was upgraded to the basic 2mb Broadband a while back when they stopped 56k.
I was going to change b4 they switched over because of the download limit, which was something between 4 and 6gb. I knew I'd never go anywhere near that so I stayed.
Was I seeing things?
It's one of those very rare times where my download limit is about 5 gb nearly, I rarely even touch 1gb most of the time, it's just a busy internet month for me. I thought I'd better check the Orange page to see if it was 4 or 6, as I thought. I was way off.
"Your currenthome package is:
Broadband Starter - £11.73 a month, up to 2 Meg speed, Modem and 2GB usage allowance."
I'm very sure it wasn't 2gb before, and I'm very worried now. I haven't had a letter or email about going over the cap limit before, as I'm sure I've downloaded more than 2gb in a month before that can't be right. Has this changed? One email I got from them saying
"We just wanted to let you know about changes to the terms and conditions regarding your internet agreement with Orange. These changes will come into effect from 19 January 2009. You can find the full details here."
Obviously back in January, but the link just directed me to the homepage. I didn't think anything of it until now. I'm really regretting my stupidity now.
I think it's a cheek that it's offering this
"Home Starter - £9.79 a month, up to 8 Meg speed, wireless router, 10GB usage allowance and inclusive evening and weekend landline telephone calls"
While I'm still stuck with this old package, paying more for this 2gb limit
My main question though is this: What will Orange do for this one over the cap incident? Charge extra to my bill or cut me off for the rest of the month? Like I said, I've never had this happen before and I haven't been on broadband all that long. I'd call up Orange myself to chat to them but I'm not a phone person really and don't want them getting more of money
Shouldn't worry too much about occasional usage - I migrated to PlusNet last year from a 2Mb/2Gb contract with Orange - I found that I was using ~ 6 Gb per month ! but Orange hadn't said anything.
I left because I had problems with the second phone line, billing issues and a refusal to consider increasing my speed not because of poor internet connection.
If you are out of contract with Orange its worth asking for your MAC - To keep you they will prob offer something like Home Starter anyway. If they don't then there are plenty of offers out there with other ISPs.

Regarding the contract, I think it was six months and it's been over a year. It's worth considering changing. I was originally going to go with Sky as I already get Sky TV and it would of cost me an extra £5 to get the internet. The only thing that stopped me was the 30 set up fee which I could only pay with via debit/credit card, which I don't have :S
I rarely touch the 2gb limit (if that's what it is now), the most I ever do is upload a vid to youtube every month and stream an odd few. It's just this month I downloaded something big from a torrent (which I've only ever used once before, I hate torrents for this exact reason), my friend abused youtube herself, and that's about it really.

Really? That makes me feel a little better. I've been a good customer for Orange themselves for years, and Wanadoo before that, one month shouldn't be the end of the world. It wont happen again let me tell you, now that I know the limit has changed.
If they do notice though, I did ask a workmate and he told me they could just reduce my download speed for the rest of the month. I have seen that as a response here for people on the unlimited. I still can't believe it's 2gb, I know I wasn't sure if if it was 6 or 8 but I know for a damn fact that it wasn't 2gb when I upgraded to broadband. I'm sure of it.
I can't even upgrade to the new basic package as it insists on changing my phone services to Orange, and I was actually quite disappointed as they were giving away a free wireless router (I badly need one for my DS connection, doh). I'm not the one who's in charge of the phone bills, so I can't do a damned thing. I don't see anyway to up my download cap that doesn't include a phone package I never liked Orange mobile, Id rather have no phones at all then to have them take over the phoneline.
As soon as I find another provider I'm out of here.
Dont worry mate. Im on EXACTLY the same package as you are. I know when ive hit my cap, because some games i cant play online and web pages take forever to load up.
Needless to say, im switching to Be or o2 (now Sky) shortly. No cap for a couple of quid more each month. Result.
