We've been with Orange for years now. Joined back when it used to be Freeserve, then Wanadoo and now Orange. I've never really been botherd about how much we were paying since I'm not the bill payer (My parents are) and I very rarely use the internet when I'm at home.
But now I've decided to help out my folks by changing providers and saving them some money.
We've never changed our package, so we've always been paying around £17.99 for a the most basic package. Currently the last statement is saying 'Broadband 1Mb - Option 1 - Monthly Price'.
What I want to know is if we are still on a monthly contract? I'm assuming since we never changed/upgraded our package that out contract expired years ago and they've just been charging us by the month ever since.
Or do they automatically sign you up to a a new 12/18 month contract? If so how would i go about finding how long I have left until I can request a MAC code?
Once the original 18 month contract has expired they will continue the contract on a month by month basis.
Contacting Orange is easy if you're precise and ask for exactly what you want.
I've just been through the same thing. Except i rang them just before the end of my 18 month. Mid day mid week. Spoke to a scottish lady. Asked if she could supply my Migration Authorisation Code. Checked a few details. Asked why i was leaving " cheaper to bundle all my costs together ". Said no to the half price contract for the entire 18 months. Completed the entire phone call in 4 minutes 19 seconds including a 30 second call wait. MAC was in my inbox the next day. It's always best to cancel the contract about 10 to 15 days after the monthly bill comes out. As this way you get more out of the month you will have to pay for from Orange.
So in short answer to your question. You can ring them now.

Thanks for clearing that all up for me!
Just a another quick question, do you cancel your contract when you phone up for the MAC code? or do you do this at a later date?
Once you are certain that your broadband has migrated. For me my Livebox stopped working. And the new Router worked. You can contact your bank and cancel and DDs you have with them.
Once you have your MAC code from Orange, and the new provider accepts it, you won't need to contact Orange anymore.
When you are up and running with the new provider it is fine to cancel the direct debit with Orange.
Your new ISP will do everything for you. Once you've supplied your new ISP with the MAC they will use this and contact Orange. Your new ISP will call you with a migration date.. It can be anything from 3 days upwards. For me it was about 7 days. Theyll tell you your service will be down for example Tuesday PM. When your ISP has changed you will normally get a call the next day to tell you your new broadband service is active. At this point you can cancel the DD with Orange.
Its worth ringing them to tell them you have migrated.
DON'T cancel your DD until you have paid for the 30 day notice period AFTER the date of migration as agreed with Orange. If you do they will put the debt collectors on you!
There are more than a few stories on this forum and others where BT have (apparently)neglected to tell Orange that the migration has taken place so Orange will keep billing ad infinitum.
It took me a lot of emails and phone calls to (hopefully!) get my migration issues sorted finally.

Hey guys me again. Haven't got round to requesting that MAC code yet, been very busy. Anyways I stumbled across an old topic in this forum from last year and someone mentioned you could actually email Orange to request a MAC code. Can you still do this? If so whats the address you email?
I'm very reluctant to phone the helpline and pay £5 a minute. Seems pointless aswel if I can get one just as easily via email.
Well, I've just followed all the above advice and requested my MAC. Painless so far - 5 minutes on the phone. It actually took longer filling out the online application to o2 (now Sky)!
I'll start a new thread with updates on the progress so others can gauge their success with mine, and to hopefully assist people with their transfers.
I'll keep checking in on Orange Problems regardless of my sucecss in leaving Orange as it's helped me and I'll be glad to help where I can in the future.
