I had a problem sending e-mail that was never solved: some Orange mailservers didn't have reverse DNS set up.
Many hosting companies treat as Spam (and auto-delete) any e-mail entering POP boxes on their servers if it has come from a mailserver with no RDNS.
I mailed myself, checked the headers and found that sending via smtp.freeserve.com , smtp.orangehome.co.uk or any of the others meant that my mail was often passed through mailservers with no RDNS - and it was pot luck which one.
2 Bad Orange ones:
193.252.22.191
193.252.22.190
No RDNS
1 Good Orange one:
193.252.22.151
Resolved 193.252.22.151 to 193.252.22.151
193.252.22.151 smtp5.freeserve.com
Note: putting a good IP from one of their mailservers with RDNS in the outgoing mailserver box didn't work, it wouldn't send.
Once I eventually got to talk to someone at Orange who new what RDNS was, he told me they had no plans to set up RDNS on all their mailservers. They just don't care.
I "fixed" the problem by using the SMTP on my Web server, via Port 587. Port 25 is "blocked" by Orange so you can't use anyone else, but they don't block 587.
I now send mail using my Web server and and receive mail from the POP box on it. Orange don't even know I'm sending or receiving mail, which seems to be ideal. I'd recommend it.
If you have trouble with e-mail, just do as I do. You could also use AUTHSMTP http://www.authsmtp.com/ to send your mail, for a few pounds. You're better off without Orange delivering or holding your mail.
