Hi there,
I've been with Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange for many years now, and nothing has really been a problem until I reinstalled XP the other day. Outlook was working fine before then, but after the reinstall, it refuses to connect to the Orange SMTP servers, citing many error messages such as authentication incompatibilities etc. I've tried numerous domains, and also tried the IP addresses that have been suggested. I've tried with different authentication methods, different ports, and nothing works.
I've also tried using a localhost SMTP server, to no avail (not sure of the reason why it doesn't work either), as well as several web host SMTPs with various options.
My parents really need this sorted ASAP, so any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm an experienced user as well, so you can use any lingo you know if you want.
Local SMTP and using other SMTP servers won't work because Orange (in common with many ISPs) block port 25 as an anti spam measure. Assuming you're got an internet connection and Receive is working, it can only be a configuration problem. My SMTP connection just works without any special measures (authentication etc) as many do providing you're on the same ISP ('On net' IP address).
You can check you can access SMTP without getting bogged down in authentication and obscure software error messages by going to a command prompt and typing :
telnet smtp.orangehome.co.uk 25
If you can connect it will reply something like :
Trying 193.252.22.187...
Connected to smtp.orangehome.co.uk.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mwinf3503.me.freeserve.com ESMTP ABO **************************
If it scrolls up and blanks type quit and press return and then it should say 'bye' and report its name.
If that works you can access the server.
If it times out at 'Connecting to.....' or returns 'Connect failed' or some such
you're blocked and it will never work without sorting the underlying problem (usually being 'off net' or on another connection)
I'm assuming you can receive email and that your credentials are correct here....
Try another email client, if you can get it to work it proves your sanity and computer are intact before tearing your hair out or throwing it out of the window. Outlook express is an obvious candidate or you can download Thunderbird. Once you have some success, its easier to build on it than it is to build on failure, even if its not directly on the road to where you want to go.
