I'm trying to set up my livebox with a wired connection. I am able to go through most of the installation process with no problems, but after I have entered my Orange broadband username and password it attempts to connect to the livebox but fails. It says the problem is: "the connection between your computer and your livebox is no longer available". I have tried running the installation again without success. During the installation I have not disconnected the ethernet cable, I have not rebooted the computer and there hasn't been a power cut. I'm really stuck here, can anyone help?
Thanks
Put the Installation CD back in its pouch or even in the bin. It confuses the issue and its not needed. You can configure the livebox via a web browser. Assuming your network interface is working and its set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically) you point your web browser at http://192.168.1.1.
When it prompts you for username and password both are admin.
When you get the Menu up, click on 'Internet' and put your Orange credentials on the page that appears. Clicking Validate will restart the livebox and all being well will connect to the internet.
If the above address doesn't work, then it gets slightly trickier. First step is to switch off everything at the mains - livebox included. Start the livebox up first and give it a minute to start up, before starting up your computer again. Then retry the http://192.168.1.1 address.
If not we take it up a gear and involve the command prompt.
This error message occurs if your computer is unable to connect to the Livebox after the installation software's been installed such as when a connection is no longer available.
Possible explanations are:
you've disconnected the wireless adapter. To fix, reconnect the adapter and try again
your computer was restarted while the installation was in progress. Try to install Livebox again
you moved out of range. Try moving closer to the Livebox, and try installation again
set up a wired connection, and change the channel of your Livebox
ensure that you've disabled any firewalls that you have installed on your computer
if possible, uninstall the firewall from your computer, and try to connect again
try manually entering your username and password
Don't forget to reinstall and/or renable the firewall after connection

Thanks pluggy but i'm not really sure what you are talking about, I'm not very good with computer stuff, I don't really understand the lingo. I clicked on the link but nothing happened, when am I supposed open it?
And NewApollo thankyou but most of the explanations you said don't apply as I'm trying to set up a wired connection. When I ran the installation the firewall was off for the entirety so it shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for your help but could you try and explain a bit more like a list of instructions so I know exactly what to do, sorry for being an idiot.
The link should work when you are connected to the livebox, since you are communicating here and you haven't set the livebox up I assume you're using another connection somewhere. It will only work when you're connected to the livebox (which presumably isn't when you're on here). It is not an internet page, it doesn't need to be connected to the internet, but it does need to be connected to the livebox. If you're using the same PC to talk here as connect with the livebox, you may have some non standard settings to make the 'other' internet connection work in which case theres more to it.
Assuming you're using Windows XP, connect up to the livebox and click Start, Run
type 'cmd' (without the quotes) and press enter.
It should pop up with a command prompt.
At the command prompt type 'ipconfig /all' again without the quotes and press enter and relay what it comes back with here. That will tell me (and anyone else with TCP/IP experience) whats happening with your connection and what the likely next step is.
This link will work on the internet and is a screen shot of what I'm after looks like. It won't have the same numbers but it gives a good clue.
- For v1 livebox: unplug the power, hold the number 1 button, plug power back in, you'll see 3 solid lights (generally the @, arrows and phone) you can then let go of the number 1 key
- For v2 livebox: stick a pin in the reset port and wait for a blue lights to go up and down along all the lights, sort of looks like Kit off Knightrider
2: Turn off / uninstall any firewalls or anti-virus / internet security programs that are not Windows / Mac standard
3: Ensure you have the correct IP address details
- For XP: go to Start > Control Panel (view in classic) > Network Connections > (right click) Local Area Connection > Status > (click on support tab)
The IP details are as follows... IP Address should be in the format of 192.168.1.x (x represents any number, usually between 10 and 255. Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and Default Gateway should be 192.168.1.1
- For Vista: Start > Control Panel (view in classic) > Network and Sharing Centre > (look under tasks) Manage Network Connections > (right click) Local Area Connection > Status > Details
The IP details are as follows... IPv4 IP Address should be in the format of 192.168.1.x (x represents any number, usually between 10 and 255. IPv4 Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and IPv4 Default Gateway should be 192.168.1.1
If these details are correct, ensure the computer and livebox are communicating. Easiest way is to open Command Prompt via your Accessories menu on the Start Menu and type in after the white writing EXACTLY as follows...
ping 192.168.1.1
If you receive anything along the lines of unable to find host, destination host unreachable or anything other than something like pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data followed by reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes 32 etc. then something is wrong and we'd need to get more details as pluggy suggested. You should also note on the Command Prompt window, where it says ping statistics, you should have 0% loss, if you are getting loss then either the PC isn't setup right or your livebox is broken. It might need a firmware recovery or replacement.
Hey everyone! Thanks for all your help. For some reason, this time that I plugged it all in, I am able to go on the internet and therefore just use the livebox. The modem that I was using before to access the internet is no longer connected. This feels really strange as I was just preparing to install it again. I uninstalled the livebox and for some reason it works. How can it work and not even be installed?
However when I checked the command prompt for the ip address and stuff, the default gateway has no value after it as if there isn't one. Is this a problem? And how can you enter the value that liquid stated for it?
I also want to connect my ipod touch to the wireless network from the livebox. I can find the livebox on my ipod but then i need a password and i dont know what this is or even how to alter it on the computer so can anyone help?
Ok, moment of joy over, the livebox doesn't work again . So I'm back to the trusty modem!
I tried the link that you suggested pluggy but it didn't work. So I turned everything off and then tried again but it still wouldn't show the page.
I ran the command prompt that you said and this is what it said:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator>ipconfig/all
I'm using the red one. Should I try the yellow one? Because in the included livebox setup guide it shows the red ethernet cable going into the red socket so I assume this is correct.
Your problem is that your wired connection on your computer is set to manually configured and its on an incompatible subnet with no default gateway set. 192.168.0.1 cannnot 'see' the livebox IP of 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. You can either set the wired interface to automatically configured or you can manually set the ip address to say 192.168.1.12, the dns to 192.168.1.1 and the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask is correct at 255.255.255.0
Go to Control Panel and Network Connections, right click on your wired connection (Intel(R) PRO/100 VE) , Properties, double click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) which brings you to here (or similar)
I'd hazard a guess that your modem is a PPPOE device wired via the ethernet connection with those settings.....
Reading back through your posts, the livebox doesn't need to be installed, any operating system written in about the last 10 years will work without any installation. Providing the Network TCP/IP bit is set correctly. With the usual state of overblown spyware infested drivers these days, you're better off without excess baggage IMO, and router drivers are excess baggage............

Thanks so much! I am now online but I can't configure the livebox because it won't accept the username and password that I'm entering. Is it just the same as my Orange broadband username and password because this is what I've been trying but it's not working. The form asking for my details just keeps popping back up as soon as I've pressed ok.
Thanks again
