From experience Linux wireless drivers can be temperamental and will choose to work perfectly with some routers/ access points and not at all with others. I had exactly the same problem connecting an Asus EEEPC linux to a Gigabyte Access point whereas it worked fine on a Netgear on the same channel and security settings. The same criticism can be levelled at some early Windows drivers too.
Good to hear. The channel issue is likely to be a neighbours box on the same or similar frequency, in theory they are all the same. I couldn't make the EEEPC work on the Gigabyte, even turning the security off altogether.
We have a similar problem... I wonder if someone could give some hints how to solve the case.
We ordered a new livebox connection to Paris about 3 weeks ago. The box was delivered immediately, but has not been used yet (with any computer).
My wife moved to Paris yesterday and she has Acer Aspire One as a "net-surfing and messenger" computer (running Linpus lite).
The computer was bought on last Saturday. I tested it on LAN and WLAN here at home and everything went well. The network was found without any problems. And we manage to use video conference today from her office to here, home. No problems...
Now it seems that she can't get that damn Livebox working in our Paris house with the Linpus computer. I can't help her a lot, because there is like 2000 miles between us. And, of cource, she isn't really a technical person who could analyze problems well.
Could someone make a short list and tell what she should do / check to create connection to Net via Livebox? A kind of a list what a non-technical person could go throug. Or is it too much to ask
It is at the same time;
- the first time when the Livebox is used AND
- the first time when Linpus Linux is connected to the Livebox
Orange support (nor the Livebox user manual) doesn't help a lot, they only say "you are running Linux, buy Windows"
From testing experience, the best channels on a livebox are 5, 7 and 9 and on occasions 11.
Ensure that the livebox is in pairing mode whenever you attempt to connect a device to it.
Security should by default (assuming you have the latest firmware) always reset to WPA only, but to ensure maximum compatibility set it to WEP and WPA only. Remember, if you have any Windows machines already connected via WEP or WPA individually that you'll likely have to remove the preferred network connections and reconnect them, otherwise you may end up in an endless circle of one device working then the other not.
Also, note down if you need help what livebox you are using. Orange have 3 routers they use now:
- livebox v1 (the Orange logo is at the bottom right and may have a lit blue W on the back (from Wanadoo days))
- livebox v2 (Orange logo is in the centre, has blue, orange, green and red LED's on the top as opposed to just red on the older one and has livebox imprinted in the plastic cover)
- Siemans router (small, rectangular router with an aerial and no VOIP).
