Hello there, over the past week or two I have had terrible trouble trying to update a couple of small websites I manage. I contacted 1 & 1 who claim that the server is fine, however, all I get is server waiting messages, no connection or timing out.
There has been no tech or software changes from my side, firewall, anti virus etc. Ive also just waited about a minute to send a two line email, Im beginning to wonder if the problem is my broadband connection. Im using the Guiseley exchange in Leeds but this was not recognised by the speed tester.

Hi kevsimo,
You will need to try it at someone else's house, what ftp programme are you using? you could try another one FileZilla, Coreftp are free.
But going by what you said it seems it could be your connection, so to resolve it quickly try connecting to the server from a family/friend or neighbours to make sure.
Good luck

Thanks for that, in fact I was using dreamweaver and 1 & 1 recommended filezilla. Basically neither worked at all from around 18 00 to 23 00 yesterday. I went on again around 24 00 and everything flew in a matter of minutes. I've just rang Orange and had a very long winded/ expensive conversation. Engineers will test the line etc, I'm not a big techie but I'm convinced this is some sort of local overload. I'm just about to do a couple of speed tests.

Kevsimo: I've been trawling the web to find the comment you made on this website. I too am on Orange broadband of course, and have a number of websites hosted by 1and1 (1&1). Uploading can only be described as hell on earth. Its incredibly slow, whether its 1KB or 200KB. But to be honest in the last couple weeks its not uploading anything, just failing, error coding all the time. Basically the same deal when using Frontpage to upload, WSftp, Smartftp, Cuteftp, FreshFtp and Filezilla. Let me know if you make any progress, i will let you know if i make any break throughs aswell. If i can't get it resolved i'm going to have to ditch Orange.
I've been having the same problem trying to update a page with 1&1. It made no difference whether I used an FTP program or the site's online file manager - the uploads simply froze. Blaming 1&1 I tried moving the whole page over to some free space I have at 50webs.com and the same thing happened. Eventually I used my neighbour's connection to upload my files. All very strange - does anyone have an explanation?
The neighbour is with a different ISP. the files uploaded without problems.
I've just done an online speed test which gives an upload speed reading of 199kbit/s, which is apparently good. I've uploaded stuff in the past without any trouble - haven't changed my firewall or anything. Just baffled.

It seems like its your connection, especially if this started happening recently for no reason, going by other forums Orange have lots of problems at the moment but won't admit it, so i wouldn't fiddle with anything your end at the moment.
btw, how did you use your neighbours did you temporarily connect to their network or do it from their house?

Hi
That's why i was wondering how you connected, so, if you connected through your neighbours network that confirms its nothing to do with your set up and definately at Orange's side, but it would be a waste of time and money ringing them cos i doubt any of them even know what FTP is lol.
My only advice is if your not in contract migrate to another ISP as 80% sure you will wait forever for them to improve their network.

Well I hesitate to say it but I've just got home and things seem resolved. This follows a very long conversation to customer support at a farawaway call centre yesterday. Having wasted several days trying to get a response by email, I did get through to somebody who did seem to have good technical knowledge and said he would escalate the problem.
I asked for feedback but said that I had to ring back in five days - I was pretty sceptical but things do seem better today already, although I have no idea why, or what they may have done?!
I did explain that I was getting reasonable download speeds nearly all the time. But as well as not being able to connect via ftp to 1&1, my browser took an age to render my own websites which are very lightweight and often timed out on some sites. In the meantime i had tried various computers, different routers & also used a friends o2 (now Sky) wireless connection across the road, which proved everything at my end was fine and the problem was undoubtedly with Orange.
So for the moment I seem OK but cant help anyone in a similar position because Im not sure what the cause was or what the fix was. Unless there has been a big coincidence after a lot of wasted time I did manage to get hold of a helpful and competent advisor at the call centre. I can only recommend persistance - but in the long term I think I shall move provider.
If I get anymore info or feedback as to the cause and solution I will post again
Your connection problems could have been caused for any number of reasons, which may or may not have been out of Orange's control.
Typically ADSL connections are just plain rubbish, regardless of your ISP. As most of you probably know, speed can decrease considerably depending on how far you are from your local exchange, also the connection from the filter in your wall socket to the modem can suffer from noise caused by other electrical appliances, which will also have a direct impact on your connection speed.
Now when Orange says they are going to do a line test what they do is look at the amount of noise on the line, if theres a lot they will change your connections profile which technically should improve your speed or connection issues.
But like I mentioned previously, it could have been caused by any number of reasons not directly linked to Orange, e.g. dos attack on your hosts servers, BT downtime (after all a lot of links are still run over their network), power outage or just general network congestion.
My advice - Get cable with Virgin Media if you can, its far more reliable and even faster than ADSL ever will be.
It is likely to have been Orange. There network has been dropping packets recently, having difficulty managing a constant stream of data. Latency has also increased.
