This delay was due to an unusually high number of attempts to send email to a specific account on this server. Within one twenty minute period there were over 31000 attempts to send email to a specific mailbox
That sounds like a massive spam attack to one account.
Mail seems to be back to normal now but I think I'll change my POP / SMTP settings from Freeserve to Orange as recommended.
Since some folk claim to never get notification emails from Orange I'm posting this which I got this morning--
Hello. Good news.
We're working on improving the Orange website and Orange Email which will mean a better service for you in the very near future
Just be aware that,.from 9pm Wednesday 12 November to 2pm Thursday 13 November, you might experience temporary problems sending emails if you use Orange.co.uk or a program like Outlook Express.
But don't worry. It won't affect any emails you receive. They'll be stored and available when the site's back up and running. Unfortunately, you won't be able to make changes to your account, either online or by telephone during this time. So we'd like to apologise in advance since this situation is unavoidable. However, we're confident that our new improved service will make up for any inconvenience.
There's more, about setting up spam filters etc on the webmail reader.
I haven't had any of the problems experienced by the rest of you, until today. I can still send emails OK (sent one to my Hotmail account as a test and it arrived straight away) but we haven't received any email, not even spam, since early this evening, despite sending myself a couple from various addresses (and one or two I was expecting earlier today failed to arrive too). I wonder if they've started the work early, or if the problem has spread???
