"I have a PPTP VPN tunnel to my workplace, that once connected is failing to resolve dns names.
I pickup an IP address from my workplace subnet of 192.168.0.X and the DNS server addresses of 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11
However, suddenly since my router rebooted appx 4 hrs ago, I am not able to resolve the dns names on my workplace vpn network using the above dns addresses.
I can ping hosts on my workplace's network using IP addresses but the dns is not resolving.
I contacted the network administrator and he asked me to perform an nslookup query.
When he asked me to enter a hostname on the vpn network, it did not resolve and instead the dns server that this livebox router is using attempted to query instead of forwarding to the dns server's on the vpn network.
The vpn tunnel is working because I can ping hosts using their IP address, however there is some problem with dns resolution in that the LiveBox appears to be attempting the name resolution instead of forwarding that to the configured dns settings on the vpn tunnel."
Could anyone help - every time I call Orange "we dont support VPN" I know that but its not a vpn issue
This is down to Orange turning on 'DNS Error Hijacking', so previously when a page (or DNS name on your work network) could not be resolved on Orange DNS servers, it would go onto the next method (VPN). However with this service turned on, the page (or DNS name on your work network), the Orange server DNS server returns the 'enhanced error page', and does not continue onto the next available method (VPN).
Tiscali have this same 'service', but they give users the ability to opt out.
We have this same problem with several of our users, and the main issue is connecting to Exchange server. We have put a workaround in place, which is editing the Windows hosts file, this isnt ideal as IP addresses could change, or there might be a large number of IP addresses that need to be added.
Orange customer support do not seem to have any idea when you ask them about this service, and as you said when you mention VPN, they say they dont support it, which is very frustrating.
Does anyone have any ideas or success of getting this service turned off by Orange?
Can I add another router to my Orange one? - I hvae signed up for a year 2 months ago and do not want to have to pay 10 months for nothing?
thanks
You can try and change the DNS servers on your router to:
195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95
This should bypass the default DNS servers that cause the problem. However I believe the DNS settings on the Liveboxes are something you cant change. You could buy a router to replace the Livebox, but you would need to configure it, and add the new DNS servers.
I have tried this with one of our users and it didnt work though!
